RPN's Working In Hospitals?

by Tashia
Updated Jul 27, 2005 at 02:53 PM by Tashia

Can anyone tell me...

I just asked a career advisor if it is possible for me to get a job working in a hospital after school. This is what she told me,

"It is more difficult to get a job in the hospital...mostly due to RPNs keeping those jobs forever because of the salary and job (challenge)".

Just wondering how many of you RPN's are working in a hospital, and was it difficult to get in? Did you have to take any specialty courses? If someone could give me an idea, I live around Kitchener, Cambridge. How is it in your area of Canada?

I live near Orangeville and I know 2 RPNs that are working in our hospital as new graduates. They had no trouble getting jobs there and since the RPNs can do the med rounds now they will be using RPNs more than before.

I have heard though that the RPNs do tend to keep their jobs like you said. Good luck.

I graduated from Mohawk College about two years, and I thought I would be stuck working in a LTC facility. My friends and I all got jobs soon after fnishing the program. A few of my friends work in acute medicine, day surgery and CCC. I work in CCC and I just love it.

In oNtario the trend has been to lay off the RPNs in hospitals-RNs are now providing all the care. Very few institutions that I have worked for continue to use RPNs-they tend to be concentated in LTC facilities and in home care
