passport renewal while in the US?

by beausud

hey all, for those of you who have had your canadian passport expire while in the US: is this process harder? more time consuming?, cost more $$? than going back home (Canada) to have it done? thx in advance for your help.

Hi there. I know someone that had to get a new passport because hers was going to expire. You can't go to Canada and renew it there because your living in the US.

There was some web site she went to and had to print the application off and send it. You also have to have 2 people listed on you application that know your Canadian. My friend had asked me to be one of the persons on her application. I had to answer some questions and provide my adress, etc.

My friend has moved away and I haven't heard form her but I'm sure if you went through Google to find the web page concerning Canadian passports. Hope this helps.

hello, well mine acutually expires in october '04, i wanted to go home to renew it. gives me another excuse to go back home.. BUT i dont have my !@#$! visa screen; i've read on another post that people who have been employed in the US as an RN prior to '03 (which applies to me)... can go back to canada without the visa screen. if im going to chance this i will have my company write me a letter stating the details of my hx w/ them. anyhow... thx for your help. i'll check out the web, just in case i stay here and get it done instead.

I renewed my passport in May and it was a pain in the butt! You can search for the Canadian passport office on google. There is an online form that you print out and then you have to have your picture taken (close thing to a mugshot that you will ever see), copy your driver's license, send your original birth certificate, marriage license if your name is different, get a guarantor that will swear that you are who you say you are and two personal references. I think it costs about $95 CDN. I just put in on my visa. I applied at the end of April and it should have arrived in May, but it didn't, so when I went back to Canada in June, I didn't have my new passport. My husband had to FedEx it to me so I could get back into the US. I had another copy of my birth certificate so I was able to get into Canada, but it was touch and go there for a while. It was almost enough to convince me to get my US citizenship just so I wouldn't have to go through that again!

hey, thx for your reply. i have all the required paper work EXCEPT for the guarantor... i have to send it back home to have my MD sign it. my picture looks horrible.. i have to live w/ that for 5 yrs.. oh well. i had it done at the local walmart here; they didnt have that photographer's stamp on it, so i had to write all that info on the back of my pic myself. *thats ok to do right?* *can i have it delivered here to me in the US also?; i just have to write my addie here (US) on the "self address sticker"*. anyhow... we'll see what happens.
