Nursing school as mature student

I have just started the BScN program in Toronto. I am hearing conflicting reports on starting salary and job prospects when I am done. How much do I stand to make? Do newbies ever make more than the collective agreement? Also, I have an advanced business degree, and I wonder if that might help. And finally, I hear that student nurses can get jobs in the hospitals while they go to school. Any idea how much they make?

Thanks so much for your help!

First it depends which province you are registered in as to your wage. They are all different. I am in BC. We start around 22.00 and up to about 32.00. I doubt you will get a job as an RN or even a student RN at a hospital. Alot in my class were able to work as care aides in extended care facilities though. Good wage and experience.

I guess it depends on the nursing shortage where you are going to school. The hospital that I do my practicum in, and will do my preceptorship in, has asked my class to work as student nurses NOW. We would make somewhere around $18/hour as casual nursing students. They are in a severe nursing shortage though. Each nurse cares for an average of ten patients/shift. If someone calls in sick... they are LUCKY to find even one person willing to work yet another overtime shift to cover. I spoke with a few of the casual RN's... they work full-time hours even though they casual staff... we are THAT short. I have not agreed to work as a student because I am so short of time now (average three or four hours of sleep/night during the week) and think working two 12-hour shifts a week on top of the two 12-hour practicum shifts, classes and nonstop homework would kill me.
