Nurses in Ontario( Toronto)

Alberta is also a two year programme for PNs. BC seems to be in it's own lala land world when it comes to training PNs. They also seem to have a lot more "career college" type training schools than other places. Most PNs in Alberta go through Community Colleges and what were Vocational/Trade schools similar to Vancouver Vocational Inst.

You need to contact the nursing college in Ontario to answer your questions. I do remember a classmate that moved to Ontario and did her final practicum there.

The licensing exam is a national exam, so if you've already passed it you shouldn't have a problem. Your education might be deemed lacking and you may have to upgrade a few courses. I know that Pns moving to Alberta from BC a few years ago had to upgrade their Anatomy, it wasn't as in depth as ours and skipped a few things like Eye Exams and the like.

The RPN program in Ontario is 2.5 years.. when including your period of consolidation. They will hire LPN's under the title of a PSW, CCA or Nurses Aide, which is an unregulated/ unlicensed position... but you will not be able to practice as a nurse in Ontario until you meet the critieria which could be a least another year of full time school. Disagree. If you hold a valid license and passed CPNRE you are a licensed nurse across Canada. Your education is checked by each province you apply to be licensed in. It is only in individual hours that you have to make up hours of education.

What you are basically saying is you believe that every PN educated before the two year diploma came into being would have to go back to school and upgrade. This is completely an incorrect assumption.

Call the College of Nurses of Ontario, and ask them about getting your RPN licence. They have a very VERY helpful 1-800 number, and they are the only ones who can tell you for sure what your situation is.

I'm not totally familiar with the Toronto RPN situation, but as far as I know, nursing homes still hire RPNs.......acute care hospitals I think hire mostly RNs now.

Yes, there are RPN-BScN bridging courses, but I'm not sure how competitive they are. Look through some of the Toronto College/University websites. I don't have time to have a look myself, but the some name for you to google: Humber College, George Brown College, Seneca College, Centennial College, York University, Ryerson University, University of Toronto.
