And if the stuff comes up via UPS or FedEx the brokerage fees are fantastic. My kids ordered some stuff from Bungie and the brokerage fees were 50% of the price they paid for the stuff ($120 merchandise with brokerage fees of $64)

Are you saying that the "brokage fees" are similar to shipping fees? That seems like highway robbery!

Sears has great stuff too!

No, brokerage fees are ON TOP of shipping fees. The company charges a fee for "brokering" the purchase and shipping, for services such as filing documentation with Customs and collecting the duty and taxes owing. Their fee is often two or three times as much as the money they collect for the government. I ordered some hobby supplies once and they were delivered by UPS. The duty was zero, the taxes were $5.00 and the brokerage fee was $30. I refused to accept delivery and told them to send it back to the shipper. A couple of months later I got a collection notice for the fees! I won't buy anything online or by mail from the US unless they ship USPS. Any time I've had things delivered that way has come to my door in the hands of my letter carrier and I pay her the duty and taxes. Actually, some packages have been deemed duty and tax free and I haven't paid a cent.

sknurse,

Before you order anything from the internet check out Brokerage fees, according to Jan and Fiona they can be very steep.

Sounds like you have a good plan, the experience you are getting will help you with the CRNE.

Fiona was simply saying that it sounded like your orientation is similar to the one Capital Health has. I'm sure she knows you're in Saskatchewan, since your user name says that and the thread is about living in Regina.

If you order things online from a Canadian company, the shipping charges will likely be whatever they've set based on how much your order is. But you can order from Sears Canada online and not pay for shipping if you live close to a parcel pickup location. Their website will tell you.

SKnurse,

I have been thinking about you, you have demostated basic nursing knowledge and now have knowledge working on a floor independently as a GN. These are all positives

I have read what the CRNE is based on, much on Canadian Health Programs and preventive nursing areas that you and I don't have any experience.
Your schooling didn't have you practice the Canadian way of writing the test.

If I was in your shoes, I would contact the local University, talk to the nursing department. Ask if they have a list of tutors. They can make a plan for a review based on your needs. Ask a couple of the other phillipine nurses if they would like to share the cost.

I had my kids tutored ( non nursing)- much cheaper that a review course and both kids did very well since the tutor was vested in their personal needs. Also I think it will help you manage your time.

Just a thought.

For winter gear, Mountain Equipment Co-op has lots of outdoorsy stuff, and they'll ship for free if your order is more than $150. I love their silk long underwear!

Their stuff is great, a little pricy but very warm. (My daughter loves it!) They also want you to have a membership to their cooperative before they'll sell you anything.
