Looking for an employer in Vancouver

by wasup

I am RN from Israel. Nowadays I study for the CRNE and already have the temopary registration. In addition, I am looking for an employer in Vancouver. What is the best way to find one? Should I contact hospitals directly or to look for an agency?

Hi,

British Columbia is devided in 6 health authorities. These health authorities are the main employers for healthcare in BC. I would give you their websites, but am not allowed to post them. If you are looking for work in Vancouver itself, you should look for the Vancouver coastal health authority or the Provincial health services authority, this last one is in charge Province wide of the specialty areas (BC Children's and Wowen's in Vancouver, cancer agency etc.) If you are looking outside Vancouver but still in the lower mainland you can look at the Fraser Health authority. They are all very easy to find on Google.
Let me know if you have trouble and I will send you the links in an e-mail.

Thank you very much, Marijke. Are these authorities private or of the state? Is it the only way to find an employer or there is some agencies and hospitals I should contact directly?

Medical care is mainly government funded in Canada. What type of nusing are you looking for? If you are looking for a hospital job, you need to talk to the health authorities.
You can try the following: http://www.healthmatchbc.org/, which is a website which has job openings for all hospitals in BC.
Some of the jobs are what they call casual postions, which basically means you are not guaranteed hours. With the current nursing shortage this should not be a problem. If you are willing to work all shifts, there will be plenty of work.
The way it works is as follows. Hospital nurses have to be BCNU (nursing union) members, working in a particular hospital gives you seniority. When a position becomes available in this hospital, the nurse who applies with the most seniority gets the job. As a casual nurse you get seniority for the hours worked. The more specialized you are the better chance you have of skipping the casual job stage and gaining stable employment immediately, BC is screaming for ICU, OR, Obstetrical and Neonatal nurses (and other specialties).
I made the move from the Netherlands 15 years ago and looking back I would not change a thing.
Let me know if there is anything else I can do, probably better to send me an e-mail as weeks go by I don't get to this website.

This isn't completely accurate. There is nothing to stop a person from applying directly to the hospital or facility where they wish to work. The regional health authorities' online careers listings permit an online application right from within the posting. Vancouver Coastal Authority's website is pretty simple to navigate. Within about two minutes I'd found a lengthy list of job postings in a variety of settings. I recommend that the OP try it.

In addition to the 5 gegraphical health authorities and the Provincial one there is also Providence health which is a faith based health provider. They are based in Vancouver itself too.

This is hard situation. And strange too, since words "shortage" and "nursing" are always together.
In Israel, did you work in hospital mimshalti? I need an advise how to resign. Feel free to connect me privately .

Hi there,
I'm a RN in Hong Kong and have just completed my first stage of the registration process with CRNBC.
And now i'm about to apply for a temporary RN registration in Canada and also the CRNE. I've got some information about examination tutors, are they good? are they expensive? or should I consider to take a re-entry program (though it's not a must to take)?
I'm also planning my budget for the period in Vancouver before I can pass my exam, I wont be able to afford an expensive course, and I am not sure about the salary to work as a temporary (supervised) RN, (you know, we wont get paid in Hong Kong!)
I will be grateful if someone can give me some advice.
Wasup, I wish you all the best in your job hunting~
Marijke, I would also like to get those websites as well, please PM me. thanks a lot!

Hello!
This is Natalia , Russia . I have a question about Temporary Registration.
-How much time does it usually take to receive a letter from College, indicating that I’m eligible for temporary registration?
-How much time do I have after I got this letter to deal with other forms (applying for exam…)?
For example, I got a letter in autumn. May I delay a process of filling up other forms up to summer?
In the fact sheet of Temporary Registration said that applicants may be eligible for temporary registration if … have B.C. employer agreeing to provide supervision. Does it mean that an employer offer will be given me before I have a letter indicating that I’m eligible for Temporary Registration? I can’t understand this moment, please, explain.
Thank you, Natalia.
