Irish nurse seeking move to Canada....


Hi,
1st post here....this website is fantastic by the way!
I'm Irish, trained in London, England, where I've been qualified for 3 years, specialising in Gynaecology/ Women's Health, and now have position of Ward Sister/ F Grade.
Have been interested in moving to Canada/ US for a while....however, I think Canada is more appealing.
Can you let me know if NCLEX and Canadian Nursing Exams are similar (I've done 2x 10wk courses in NCLEX prep) and where in Canada would be best to relocate.
Also, are there any Gynaecology nursing specialities in Canada, or is it just under Med/ Surg as in the US.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Canada is great wherever you go. We have considerably less crime (murders/shootings) than other countries but even less if you go to the smaller cities.

If you like warm weather pretty much all year round with really mild winters go to Vancouver. If you like flat terrain...go to the prairies. If you like cold winters with ice skating on the longest outdoor rink in the world..move to Ottawa.

We have the midwifery nurses but that's all I know concerning that. Sorry. I'm only a nsg student and have no need to look into specailties just yet. I did hear that the exam here is similar to the NCLEX but again..I don't know for sure since I haven't taken it.

There are gyne specialty wards in larger hospitals. In smaller hospitals gyne will mean a woman with any kind of problem. What are you looking for when you relocate (weather, population, mountains, ocean?)? I would recommend Vancouver or Victoria to anyone.

I suppose the larger hospitals are in the larger cities.... I'd go anywhere...been living in London for past 8 years in the smog and pollution, although home is by the Irish north- western coast (next- stop Canada:-) where there's rarely a car in sight! I'm used to both worlds...however, I do miss the country living and fresh air! If I got the opportunity to go to Canada, I'd go anywhere though! Just happy to go!

Well, Vancouver is home to BC Women's and Children's. The women's hospital would allow you to continue on in gyne. They provide pretty good opportunities for cross training to other areas if you are interested too. I would suggest you go to www.healthmatchbc.org to get an idea of the types of jobs available.

Alright, alright fergus. Stop with the Vancouver is sooooo ultimately awesome spiel. just kidding.

Where you wanna go is beautiful Ontario !!!!!!! We have the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario here with some of the best breakthrough cardiac medicine in the country. The Heart Institute is also here. Our OB/GYN units just got expanded. Can't wait until clinicals.

Seriously though. I've thought of moving to Vancouver myself for the mild weather. But I'd miss it here too much I think.

I lived in TO for a while and could recommend some places there too (Mt Sinai, St Micheal's and Sunnybrook are all nice), but if this poor nurse is coming from England/Ireland, I think Ontario winters are just too much The only place with comparable weather is BC. I miss the friends I have in Ontario, but I can't honestly say I miss Ontario itself at all. I don't think humans were meant to exist in those kind of weather conditions....

Do you know if Ontario has a similar health recruitment website? When I was looking for work out there I just went to www.hospitalsoup.com and clicked on Canadian Hospitals then typed in the city names, but I never found anything like healthmatchbc.

I should also say my aunt has worked at Royal Alex and UA hospitals in Edmonton and likes them and a friend of mine works at Foothills in Calgary and likes it there.... But again... the weather!!!

Yeah I know. It's brutal. That's why we go down south with the geese for winter.

I'm not sure about that website but I will look into it .

Canada has the same licensing requirements as the US, meaning that you have to have generalist training in all areas, not specialist training only. Make sure that you have enough clinical and theory hours in mental health, as well as adult medicine to have your credentials approved.

I agree with fergus that BC is awesomely beautiful,and doesn't have our snow but she doesn't mention the RAIN.lol No matter where you go nurseIrish, Canada is beautiful with it's own charm in all provinces. Welcome
