Failing an exam because of a disability

Hello all.

My name is Brent, I'm not a nurse but I would like to get some questions answered to help my girl friend. First I'll tell you about the situation. My Girl friend has failed three time's writing her quebec exam in Montreal. She has been working at her town hospital for three years, and now she's fired. I know she is dyslex, and thats probably the reason why she has been failing her exam. Now say if she is diognosed with dyslex just say. My question is, would it be against the disability discrimination act for her to fail the exam because of the disability? I'm sure there's a way for her to pass the exam.

More than likely testing accommodations will be made for her once she is properly diagnosed and goes through the process for making her disability known. However, nothing can be done about the past and until she takes the first step to deal with this. Good luck to both of you.

Silverdragon is talking about the Canadian forum within the Allnurses site. Things Canadian are discussed there. Just look at the upper left of your screen now that she has moved your thread.

My children are dyslexic. They were both diagnosed while in elementary school. They have recieved support and exam assistance over the years.

How did your girlfriend manage to make it through nursing college without being diagnosed? How did she pass exams there? She's maintained her job without being diagnosed?

I agree with the above. She must make the effort to be formally diagnosed with whatever learning disability that she has. In Ontario, most colleges will make accomodations for those with learning disabilities. She really should look into this before trying the exam or school again.

I think that even in some cases, those with disabilities may even be able to obtain extra funding for school depending on the policies of the provincial government.

Since she has already graduated from a nursing school, it may be a challenge for her to get supporting documentation that proves she has a disability that prohibits her from taking the Quebec nursing exam under standard exam conditions. Are the Quebec exam conditions different from her nursing school exam conditions? If so, in what ways? ..... are the questions more abstract or something?
If she is going to be assessed for a learning disability she can start by doing a self assessment. She can review her past report cards and course work and identify areas where she is weak and areas where she is strong.

I agree with every one else that she needs a proper diagnosis before she can go any further....and if she is dyslexic....she will be able to seek the proper support.....although i agree with others if she got through nursing school...then why was it not an issue before????

I don't think that it's fair to say that it's against disability discrimination act for her to fail....because if she was dyslexic and had the support....she still needs to have the knowledge to answer the questions...without the knowledge....the dyslexia is irrelevent.....

May I ask why this has only been identified after she had had all three attempts...and failed?
