My friend is a dietary aide in a nursing home... she mostly works in the kitchen, and then distributes food to the residents. No schooling that I know of- just on-the-job training.

In the kitchen, I think she helps prepare some of the food, pours juice/water/milk/tea/coffee for the residents, makes the dessert (and puts it in bowls) and then gives it to the residents.

She has to know which residents are diabetic, which ones need minced or pureed food, etc, but you learn that there.

Hope this helps!

I work as a dietary aide in a rural hospital. I didn't have any previous training in that area before I applied but if you can get you Safe Food Handling Certificate it would not hurt you a bit. Other than that just go and apply and best of luck to you.

I was a stay at home mom before I went to apply. I hadn't worked in 7 years, and was a little nervous about my usefullness.. but then I got the first job I applied for and have been trained in many areas since.
