Crne ... Community Health Nursing

Hi Everyone,

It seems like many people have questions about community health nursing, so I thought I create a new thread. There was a lot of community questions on the CRNE exam. How did you all prepare for this part. Can anyone recommend a good book that they used or their school used. Thanks.

Hey, I tought I would answer a little something.
The book we use at our shool is Community Nursing Promoting Canadians' Health by Miriam J. Stewart. Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think a book could really had help us prepared for the community health's questions. They were kind a really weird questions.
Sometimes I think that it helped me to know the different age developement like for each age group what are their needs of health education and what is the proper way to teach each group.

I've also heard the same. The two texts we used by Myer's and Stamler and Yui are very broad and don't directly answer specific areas that the CNRE may ask. Just as what the above poster stated, health education and how to properly teach a group is no where explained in the texts. Even if you go through Erikson's growth and development stages, it still won't answer any specific questions one may have. It's obvious they want you to think of the stage of each group and select your best answer from there.

I'd also like advice for the community section. Where did you study to be prepared for the CNRE? I feel it's a stab in the dark.

I haven't written the exam, but from what faculty tells us..... the whole exam is a lot like that. (Asks very specific questions without us possible every having learned that specific info) It's ALL about what is the BEST answer which is what kills us students on nursing exams (in school). They are all about critical thinking and that jazz, which is good, but it makes for a brain bender of an exam.

Doesnt the prep exam help with the Community Health Nursing part? I am looking at doing the CRNE exam October 2007 and will be purchasing the prep exam soon. Any other advice to know in preparation?

I took the exam yesterday (yes, it is as horrible as you hear) and used the study guide from the CRNE...it helps with getting you familiar with the WORDING of the test, but not with the content. I also bought the online readiness test and it was a waste of $40+ unless you just want extra questions to practice with. I took the NCLEX in January and there are SOOOO many more study resources for that exam than there are for the CRNE. I took the HURST review for the NCLEX and took the online version for the CRNE, but like it is said- a LOT of community based nurse questions...not covered in any prep class for the NCLEX that I know of, and I don't know of any CRNE prep classes that are available. If I didn't pass- I am going to actively find SOME sort of Canadian prep for this ludacris test.

I took the CRNE in June and passed. It was very hard, felt like I failed. All of us did really. But not one person did. (From my school, no one has ever failed actually). We learned alot of community stuff in 4th year . And it consisted of assessing needs and program planning and all that. I found it VERY common sense. And it is really. But if you havent had any theory to point you on the right track, it may seem impossible. Lots on immunization and public health stuff too. That is more specific. I am curious as to what type of questions were on the Oct exam. Hope to get a response!

I also payed for those Certinurse tests but I am not satisfied with them. It is a waste of money. It does not even include community nursing at all.I am going to take the test next week in February, 2007 and I feel like I am preparing for a philosophy/political science test not for a nursing test. Everything is about words and many of the questions seem elusive. Even if I studied continuously for month I am not confident thatI know what I should know.

My RPN course had 10 weeks of community health. We used Community Health nursing; a Canadian Perspective. Stamler & Yiu.
