Change from LPN Certificate to Diploma. Want to do it online.

by kelseya

Hi, I did one year for the LPN program and got a Certificate in the US. My certificate was accepted in Alberta where i now work. My husband wants us to move back to Toronto. My question is does anyone know any college that offers online course to change from Certificate to Diploma LPN. CNO didn't accept my registration and wants me to meet the Ontario Diploma standard. Thanks in advance for your reply.

Ontario RPN programs can be done on a part time basis at some colleges but I have not heard of an online program anywhere. There is also a lengthy clincial component that they may require you to do which will include quite a few skills that will have to be taught in a lab and practised in a clinical area. That said, I could be wrong about no online programs, so I would just start checking out websites of colleges in Toronto that offer RPN programs.

OK, there is something missing here. If CLPNA accepted your Certificate from the US and you wrote and passed CPNRE, why is Ontario rejecting it? If you pass the national exam you are good to go.

When the diploma was introduced all certificate LPNs were grandfathered. I remember this because quite a few LPNs wanted the diploma.

Which area is your education lacking in? The main difference in the diploma/certificate in Alberta training was the addition of university transfer Arts credits.

The OP has not written the CPRNE. She was not given the green light by the CNO.

I have seen courses for upgrading from the one year certificate to the new standard of two year diploma but they have all involved classroom time and clinicals so none of them were online.

So, did they grant an interim permit? It really doesn't make a lot of sense. She's also posted about her hourly rate, and it's way too high for an LPN in AB (even including shift/weekend rates)

Well, top tier pay rate for an LPN in AHS is $28.44. If you work evenings/weekends the shift premiums are $2.50-2.75. The night rate doesn't kick in until 2010.

So as far as I know, senior LPN working Friday/Sat/Sun evening/night would top out at around $33.50/hour.
