UFV January 2013 BSN Hopefuls

World Canada CA Programs

Published

Well yesterday was the application deadline for the University of the Fraser Valley's January 2013 BSN intake. I'm just curious if there are any other anxiety-ridden current applicants out there like me. I'm hoping to create a place where maybe we can all help calm each other's nerves, but in all honesty probably just make each other much more anxious.

This is my first time applying to UFV's nursing program. Previously, my plan was to move to Ontario and complete my degree out there (where I'm originally from). I was accepted into my first-choice school, and made plans to go. Then many situations including money...and money...and well...more money ended up nixing those plans for me. I was BEYOND disappointed to eventually turn down a NURSING ACCEPTANCE, but I know in the long run it made more sense for me to stay local, and complete my degree here (and for about $50000 less since I won't have living expenses). I knew it was in my best interest to go through the program without loans and without having to work. The one positive thing was that I made room for another anxiety-ridden applicant to get a spot--it's one way to make light of the situation, I suppose.Anyway, so here I am.

I have been working my little buns off for the past two years trying to prepare myself for this application process. I upgraded 4 high school courses and I am currently registered to do two of my non-nursing classes for the fall 2012 semester. The school I was accepted to in Ontario didn't require volunteer hours, so I scrambled to complete them all this year since turning down my acceptance. I have completed 60ish hours in a long-term care home and I'm currently volunteering at a hospital emergency room (which just began, so unfortunately won't show on my application).I feel extremely ready for this program. I'm in the right mindset; I graduated 5 years ago, completing a post-secondary certificate through UFV and working full-time since. I have fairly good grades. I'm paying for the entire program myself and have no commitments...so I'm hoping that gives me a bit of an edge.If any of you are like me (psychotic, obsessive compulsive, over-thinkers), you'll probably have sifted through hundreds of other posts and are just as confused as I am on how the selection process works with UFV. Of course, I know they have their point system. I've read into incredible detail as to how this works, but even still I've read of people not being accepted with incredible grades, tons of volunteer hours, and a positive feeling from the interview/essay--while in the same intake, people with 40 hours volunteer, and pretty decent grades did get in (not bashing those people at all! In fact, they're the ones that gave me some confidence). I'm assuming a major chunk of this selection comes down to the maturity and approachability they experience from you in the interview/essay.

So really, my feeling is that any complete applicant has a fair chance up against each other. My ultimate goal is to get in for the September 2013 intake, as I know how competitive this process is and I'm just trying to be realistic with the timeline. This way though, if I'm not accepted into the January intake, I can at least get an idea of what I need to improve on.I would love to hear anyone else's journey thus far. And hopefully find some people to lean on throughout this process--people who fully understand the stress and determination we all feel going through this. I'm pretty sure my friends and family are ready to chop off my head off!

Wow, I had no idea the process from LPN - RN involved doing the full 4 year nursing !! that's crazy. I thought maybe they had an program for people in that situation (Maybe not at UFV, but other schools).. it's definitely not worthwhile in that case.

You should upgrade your courses and aim for September because having at least 3 As and a B ensures you'll be at the top of your game and probably a shoe-in if you do well in the other areas !

UFV nursing has gotten really really competitive. . as with nursing everywhere in general I think. Like I hear things on the forums here about BCIT's program, and how people have degrees or at least over 30+ credits before attempting to apply! Wow!

I still think .. that because your application will be kept on file, don't do the practical nursing thing, and maybe just upgrade your grades and make sure your pre-req GPA is up for September :)

Thanks for the encouragement foxrain!! That is exactly what I intend on doing. If I do the LPN my application will be dropped. Right now I am just trying to figure out when is the last day to hand in upgraded marks for September 2013

I've been randomly lurking this thread for a couple of months even though I'm already in a BscN program. Congratulations to those who got in. For those who didn't don't give up. After being rejected twice ( and spending 15k of my own money) I came close to dropping out of university completely - The rejection left me depressed for a couple of months but I decided to give it one final fight - I worked my @$$ off literally night and day to boost my GPA and I was finally accepted. Trust me, IT IS worth it. Keep at it your hard work will pay off.

My bad. The bridge LPN program is only 3 years. So, six in total.

riri.g.

I do believe that once you have your LPN you can bridge into the third semester (2nd year) BSN program, and it is now a two year program. Like someone else was saying you do have to work for a bit (not sure if it has to be a whole year) but in either case if you want to be an RN I would wait. It seems to be a lot of extra time and money to go that route. I thought about just doing the LPN thinking I might not get into the RN program too and if its not what you want then I think your making the right choice!

Also I think the last day for everything to be in for September 2013 is January 31.

Not sure where you live but I upgraded my marks at langley education centre. Its a great school and they offer paper based and web based courses. You can finish as fast as you want. I finished BIO 12 in 5 weeks before the August deadline. Kinda stressful but it can be done!

That was helpful losublime, thanks. When is the deadline to upgrade your courses for next intake?? January 31???

Thanks novo and Losublime! Yeah I decided to try for September 2013. Right now I'm signing up for online classes to finish before January 31st. I spoke to melody and she said the thing I had to work on was my interview and that was the only thing noted. I can't prove that I've gotten better on my interviewing skills so most likely I will have an interview for next intake.. Atleast that's what they said. I just don't want to risk it with my prereq gpa. That's why I'm upgrading. I'm still pretty bummed out that I didn't make it but I'm feeling better. Come to think of it, September 2013 is still the same year as jan 2013 and if I do get in and do fast track, I will be able to catch up with the time I lost. *crosses fingers.*. I noticed a lot of the people on allnurses had to apply twice before being accepted. And I really hope that's the case for the rest of us.

And Careubc you have to have your makes in by jan 31 otherwise they won't accept it and will just take that for the next intake. So now is a good time to sign up for online courses.

Big fat rejection letter waiting for m3 when I got home today. I should have been 'better prepared' for my interview.

I got a letter that said im on the waiting list , It didn't say anything I need to work on though . Guess I can volunteer more and upgrade online classes .

That's good Legacy1255! At least you're on the waiting list. :)

BaileyBee that's probably what I will have for my letter... But I'm pretty sure the next intake we will have interviews. Because the way they do it is they will look at the ones that previously applied and see what they needed to work on. We can't prove that we've gotten better on our interviewing skills so we should have an interview next intake. On the other hand, if it said that we needed to upgrade our marks then it's probably best that we do. That's something they can look at prior to getting an interview. I just plan on doing some upgrading just in case it get's even more competitive next intake. Who knows... I hope the rest of us will get accepted next intake. It would be great to catch up to the ones who got accepted this intake.

Hey,

I got my letter and didn't get accepted. I was wondering if anyone knows about the process for the Fall 2013 intake.

The people that were interviewed for winter 2013 intake and didn't get in .. will they be for sure interviewed for the fall 2013 intake?

In my letter it didn't say i need to improve academically but do you think i should? i'm so confused.
