UBC nursing application 2011

Hello,

I'm new to the site and I saw the thread for last years appilcants to UBC nursing so I thought I would start one for this year.

How is the application going for everyone, any tips from 2010 intake?

I did 1 professional 1 personal. A prof from school and a long time family friend who was a nurse. Hope this helps!

I have one thats a work supervisor and the other was the advisor for a club I volunteered for at University. I hope thats ok.

Hello!

I'm just wondering, is there anyone from Cap U who is applying? I'm having a super hard time trying to get an answer about where my transcript is. The due date is so soon...I'm having a slight panic attack! =S

On another note, does anyone know the grade averages of applicants who have been accepted in the past? I am not doing as well as I thought (2.9 GPA-71% when I was at UBC and currently have a 3.2 GPA-75% at Cap u).

Hope everyone's applications are going well. Goodluck!

Hey setteniotna!

Don't worry about your transcript... I was having the same trouble and I called the admissions office. The woman told me that as long as your transcript is post-marked before January 30th, they will accept it.

Best of luck to you all!!

these numbers were posted in another thread for 2009 intake grades and supp app

average: 78.1

supplemental avg: 73.8

Did everyone get their applications in? How are you feeling about it?

I got mine in - I'm not sure how I feel. I feel strong about my resume but very nervous about my personal statement, etc. But that's always the case, for me!

@jazzyp88 - FWIW, I have a friend who is currently in the UBC program. I asked her what she wrote for the memberships portion, as I didn't have much to put there either, and she told me that she actually just wrote "not applicable" - and she was accepted! So I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Waiting until April to hear back is going to be hard!

Hey guys I have applied to UBC for nursing too and I am really excited and nervous. I cant wait for the interview. I think they should be sending out the invitation emails soon? maybe within a week or so? because I checked from previous threads of last years intakes that they got an invitation 28 days prior to the interview. This year the nursing interview is going to be held between April 11-April 15. so im thinking they should send the invitations by march 20th?

Hmm... I'm not sure. I wasn't expecting to hear back until the last week of March or first week of April, because that's when people heard last year. I do see that the provisional interview dates on the website are listed as being a few weeks earlier this year; however, it also states that people will be informed by the end of the first week in April. Hmm.

I hope that changes (either we find out earlier, or the interview date is later) - I'd really like more than a week to prepare! (Yes, I know I can prepare either way but it's hard to buckle down when I don't know whether or not I'll use it!)

:)

Hey!

I think we'll probably start hearing by next week. The "invitation to interview" emails weren't sent out until March 28th last year because the olympics made the interviews themselves take place later in the month....

Sooo seeing as they are earlier this year, April 11-15 we should start hearing next week or so.. The invitations will be sent out over probably 2 or even 3 weeks... so it could still be the end of march before some of us find out!

So much waiting and hoping!

Yes we can all use the extra days to prepare . There are always some key questions they ask which seem easy but they are really tricky. Since I live in United States I was hoping for an interview later in April but after April 15 UBC students will be having there exams. So im sure that there provisional interview dates are accurate.

Anyway I Hope we all get the interview and get accepted :) I know how hard everyone has worked. The hard part is the pre requisites, which we all have completed. Now the only thing stopping us is the admission.

Just be positive and pray every night lol

Anyone applying from SFU? We have that silly grading system so I am not sure how UBC will interpret my grades.

I have a low 80s average which only corresponds to a B range average due to scaling. On SFU transcripts the % does not show up but only the letter grade. So I am wondering what % UBC associates with a B.

I hope this makes sense but if there are any SFU applicants who have gotten in the UBC program can you let me know what your GPA was. Thanks.

Hey Karla,

I had the same type question as I transferred from a college that only displayed my transcript marks as letter grades and not percentages. They told me that they calculate it the same way as when you apply to UBC itself. According to the nursing admission advisor, they take the letter grade and compare it to the standard UBC grading system. (ie: 90%-100% = A+, 85%-89% = A, 80%-84% = A-, 75%-79% = B+ ect.) An example would be say you took English 101 at SFU or college X and your grade was an A-. They then would take the middle value of that letter grade % range. ie: A- : 80% - 84% = ~82% (therefore they would take the middle % value and give you that). Essentially, They award you the middle % value for each letter grade and it's corresponding "range of %".

I did find this to be a little odd, and not very "accurate" especially when every % matters, but they assured me that if you received a % on the higher end of a percent range (ie: A- : 80% - 84%) and you got an 84%, they would not be able to see this on your transcript, so they would still have to award you the middle value of 82%. They argue that it "evens out" eventually because they might give you a few extra % with some letter grades where you just made it onto the lower end of the letter grade % scale (ie: an A- of 80% using our previous example).

Sorry for the long post and I hope this makes sense! If not feel free to ask any further questions and I will do my best to answer them :)
