Sprott-Shaw..DO or don't?

World Canada CA Programs

Updated:   Published

hey everyone!:welcome:

the last couple of years I've been working as a paramedic in british columbia, canada and have found that I'm better suited for nursing, I love the job but I can't stand how short the time is with the pt. I often find myself volunteering my time on my off days visiting the pts. I met from my last shifts and helping with "tiny, tiny" tasks, (getting water for a pt., adjusting pillows etc.)

now, to my question.....

as I've been researching schools, I've found some great ones here in bc, but I'm being tempted by sprott-shaw community college with its continous enrollment into the lpn program, so I could start sooner than I thought-bonus! but...the tuition is much more $$*ka-ching!***. some nurses have commented that the style of these nurses comming out is 'different', but will not say anymore. would I be as well trained taking the program through this institution as any other grad? (the advisor states that they meet the clpn standards and their grads work in the field). I guess I'm looking for some first hand advice/opinions on this institution.

thanks alot, I look forward to any responses!:)

I've been told by Interior Health that they do hire Sprott Shaw grads. Any interior LPN's have comments, what do you see in the current and future employment trends?

Hello Paramedic 80,

I would absolutely NOT recommend SPROTT-SHAW Community College. It was the most terrible experience anyone could ever have. Many other students felt the same way and we all wanted to leave there. Unfortunately, we were all in the same boat - on the hook for tons of $$$$ and a bad experience.

After graduation, they didn't care about us! They promised to help us find work as part of their last curriculum and we weren't allowed to even use the computer room to type our resumes!

They have false advertising and all they care about is taking your hard earned money. They treat the school like a shady business rather than an actual school.

My advise: Run away from there as fast as you can! Go to public colleges, it is much more worth the wait AND employers prefer to hire you from a public institutions rather than from a place with a BAD REPUTATION!!! Their bad reputation exceeds them!

Hope that helps anyone planning to go there.

I know first hand from applying to many facilities that grads from Sprott Shaw are put at the bottom of any hire list. My friends have gone to VCC and UFV and they were able to get interviews and jobs 90 percent faster than i did.

I was also told by a manager in Fraser Health that they look at Sprott Shaw graduates LAST due to their lack of training.

I totally agree with you! Don't waste your money or time because you will not get the training that you need in order to work afterwards. Also Sprott Shaw is a very terrible place. The students cheat all the time because the instructors don't teach them enough. Especially the one in Surrey. You have to watch out for instructors coming and going in the middle of the program! They are not professional there! And also not very helpful....

Hello, I'am a student of Sprott Shaw Community College. I have recently enrolled in the HCA program. For those of you who don't know HCA is Health Care Assistant. It is the new RCA program. As of now I'am on my clinical. I do realize the comments on here last one dates back too 2006. 6 years ago........... SSCC is one of the best schools. Yes the cost is more but so worth it! My instructor was amazing! She had enrolled in the HCA program and then into the LPN program. She still works as an LPN and as an instructor. She was very strict! She put alot of effort into her students. We were rewarded by SSCC the best class! My clinical instructor commented that during our clinical we were calm and confident while providing gentle care to the residents. I will be enrolling into the LPN program at SSCC. SSCC is a very good school. The instructors are amazing! It's a very warm, comfortable environment. SSCC is a very professional school with high expectations of there students. They encourage them to do their best and excel in there studies to push further in their careers and education. All SSCC students that have taken the HCA program and LPN program get hired. Also the majority of the students from SSCC graduate with honors! SSCC has a very good reputation! I highly recommend this school to any one! Thank You :nurse:

Your first post and it's a glowing recommendation.

I work with a Sprott Shaw grad who moved to AB because there wasn't any work in the lower mainland. Honestly, we're still confused. She is still on orientation (far longer than a local new grad) and we still don't believe that she graduate in "the top of her class".

Every student is different. I hope you do well and manage to find work.

Sprott-Shaw is a DONT forsure. A close family friend works for a private nursing agency and hires LPNs and will NOT take any LPNs from Sprott-Shaw. She says that they do not train students properly and the practicum just isn't long enough for students to gain the knowledge needed. One of the reasons being they take international students that barely speak any english and integrate them with students fluent in english which then causes the whole class to get held back by the international students. I know they are changing their program and are making the practicum longer but they are also raising the tuition $10,000 as well. Don't waste your money ($40,000...eeek:no:) to study somewhere what has black-balled their own name in the nursing community as you will not be able to find employment in the field. Public colleges are worth the wait... after all the whole point of bettering your education is for better employment opportunities, right?

Ever noticed that the really happy SS grads post once or twice and are never, ever heard from again? Makes you wonder...

SSCC fee is not $40000 first of all. Also you can not class all the SSCCs in the same category, because different people experience different situation. If you should ask students from different schools about the school you will have some say good and some say bad.

The course is the same for all the PN schools in the Province. But how one learn is different

As for international students you need to give them a chance too.

I've always heard that SS ran around $15K for their PN programme. I think I spent around $6K at Norquest for my PN education but that was nearly 15 years ago. That $40K figure might apply to international students? I know that the public colleges and univversities usually come close to doubling fees for off shore students.

I still find it strange that none of the happy SS customers that post here ever come back to post a second time after raving about their experience.
