Anyone else accepted and confirmed? I'm so excited I can hardly stand it! September is so far away! I'm just itching for more information/registration/timetables but thats still a few months away! :)

Hey there,

I've got a student networking question: is there an online forum (school provided or external) where Mohawk RPN students use to network with each other (either within specific intakes, or across intakes)? Trying to answer my above question, wanting to send targeted inquiries, or see if I can get our (or just my) fees diverted from Fennel's Athletic Centre to McMaster's David Bradley Athletic Centre. Don't like doing work that has been already done, or if I'm doing work, I'd rather have it benefit the greatest amount of people. Do we have a student rep, or is Brenda the best person to contact?

My answer from McMaster was the following:

"It really depends if you paid your athrec fees within your tuition. If you look at your validation sticker on your student card, if yours has a section saying Ath&Rec then you're entitled to a McMaster student base membership. However, if you don't have that section on your sticker then you'll need to purchase a membership at the visiting student rate."

Aww: "Your Athletic fee goes to Mohawk College. You have full access to the facilities at the Fennell Campus. As well as the varsity and intramural leagues at Fennell. " Will see what I can do about that redirecting it, though I'm not very hopeful!

I would be interested in using the facilities at mc master instead of fennell as its not easy to get over there to just use their gym.

Update: my hepB bloods came back its it too low!! Noooooo!!! and again because there is no record i've got to start from scratch so its 1st one wait a month then get 2nd one (which is right at christmas so I will have to find a drop in clinic that can do it, if i can get multiple doctors to sign the stupid form that has space for one) and then 3rd 6 months later. This means it will be really close to the 2 week before classes start and i think the placements start early as well, so i'm a little worried.

Completed my assessment for success today and scored 5 out of 8 (essay) and 107 out of 120 (reading comprehension) so they have me doing the online communication course during term 1.

Does anyone know which kind of mask fitting we are ment to get? i've arrange to get mine done at Conestoga this Thursday and they threw me by asking which I needed, and no where on the documentation does it specify.

Just got an email back from the Director of Student Athletics at Mohawk and she said that she is aware of the inconvenience issue and claims that they have been working on this with McMaster for some years, and that they will be revisiting their agreements in a year or two. I'm trying to see if I can opt-out of my athletics fee ($60 for 2 semesters, and there's also a $190 Student Activity Fee that I'm not sure about), though access to McMaster's David Bradley Athletic Centre (which would include access to the pools, track, squash courts, etc.) alone is $22/month for visiting students, and the Pulse membership there is $18/month or $180/yr (the gym that has aerobic machines, weights, etc), and you need an Athletic Centre membership before you can access The Pulse. *sigh*. Still worth it when you compare other public facilities though.

I'm also set to do the online communication course, but will see if I can transfer credits to get exempted from the course, as I've done University level writing courses already (health writing: with great marks too!). Totally would have spent more time perfecting the essay if I knew there was a third option, not needing to take a communication course if you get 100% or something very, very close! Would save me the trouble of proving equivalencies.

A question for curiosity's sake: how many students are in each Practical Nursing intake? Do we take all classes together as just-PN classes, or are we mixed in with other students?

Relaxingbath, I think placements are 3 weeks in (according to the updated website late time I checked): I'm sure it will be alright!

Hi!! At the IAHS, you are technically only a Mohawk student...but personally I *feel* like a MAC student lol. We use a lot of their facilities..you can use MAC's libraries or common areas if you want (head's up: BEST AREA...in the mcmaster hospital cafeteria in the basement of the health sciences portion...best food). Class sizes are pretty small...the entire class is separated into 2 blocks I believe...my block I have most of the same classes with...some people have slightly different schedules...but there is another block of people who I have never seen before! My largest class is around 40 people I think. Lab and clinical classes are really small...around 10-15 people each.

I'm starting in January 2013! I'm so excited!

But, can any of you current 1st semester students give me any sort of feedback about how you select your placements? Is there any way to know where they are before you pick your days? I am car-less so ideally all my placements will be local or easily accessed with public transportation.

Registration is SO SOON!!!

Oh, another question for the 1st semester students...did you buy all your books?! I see that there's 3 on the list that are REQUIRED but everything else is optional. I don't want to buy if I don't have to!

Unfortunately you don't get a preference for placement, you find out on orientation where you are placed. First semester placements are in nursing homes in Hamilto

Unfortunately you don't get a preference for placement, you find out on orientation where you are placed. First semester placements are in nursing homes in Hamilton. Second, third and fourth semester placements are in hospitals anywhere in Hamilton, Halton, Niagara, Brantford. You don't get a preference for that either...I'm also carless so I'm hoping to be placed in Hamilton, lol. As for the books, the three that is says are required are an online bundle with 3 core books...you access them online and it's cheaper than buying separate hard copies. You can still buy the hard copies separate if you want, but it's more expensive. My class was the.first semester they tried this on and most students don't like it, they prefer hard books...and unfortunately it can't be returned or resold. I don't mind it, but it's up to you. Other than that bundle, I didn't buy or use any of the other ones listed..you honestly don't need them. You can use any bio/anatomy book as humans don't change lol but I didn't use any anatomy book. 2 books I recommend that I bought and highly used that are not on that list is a clinical nursing pocket guide and a nursing diagnosis book..both are found in the bookstore.

Another item off my list, 1st in a new series of HepB shots and mask fitting done.

Has anyone got their time table yet? I've looked on mocomotion and it still says i'm not attending any courses. I would love to know what sort of time table i'll have so that I can arrange transport and get my student card.

How is everyone else doing with preparations? getting excited and nervous and its still over a month away!

My timetable this semester looked something like this:

Mondays - OFF

Tuesdays - Professional Development 0830-1130, Computers in Nursing 1530-1830 (but it never goes that late)'

Wednesdays - Anatomy 0830-1130, Health&Healing (Theory) 1230-1530

Thursdays - Lab 0830-1530

Fridays - Clinical 0630-1300

It's been pretty sweet. I hope I get a similar schedule for second semester.
