BCIT August 2013 Applicants

World Canada CA Programs

Hello future nurses,

I am so excited to be starting nursing at BCIT in August!

For future applicants: To have a strong application make sure you have work experience, volunteer experience (preferably healthcare), as well as liberal arts courses - my Psych 241 at SFU transferred over as a libs course and I will find out if any other courses of mine transfer over once I send them an updated transcript.

I am going to be going in with a completed BSc in Kinesiology and Psychology, but a full degree is not necessary, just at least 60 credits to be competitive!

Anyone else defer to August?

Thanks for the last two posts SunshineMonkey and dmak26! This is exactly the type of information that I crave right now.

Scrubs are MUCH cheaper in the US. So if you have the time make a trip down and buy 2 sets for clinical (plain color, nothing fancy, but some clinical instructors don't mind the 2 toned scrub sets. YMMV). Also buy a scrub top for lab. You don't need the pants for lab.

Whereabouts in the US does one go to get scrubs cheap?

There are a few places within an hour of crossing the border. Classic health apparel and uniform destination are two that I went to. You might have to make 2 trips as some sizes/colours need to be ordered in. You'll get brand name scribs (greys anatomy, koi, etc) @ Vancouver MOBB brand prices (I don't like the fit).

Hi,

I am thinking of applying for the January 2014 intake, and I am wondering if there is a limit to the number of pages you can have for the resume?

Résumés should be no longer than one page. When applying for jobs most employers will immediately put your résumé in the trash pile if it exceeds one page.

I handed in a two page résumé. I made sure that I included all jobs and volunteer work that were relevant to nursing. If its not relevant cut it out.

Anyone know a good spot to get white leather shoes suitable for clinical?

walmart has some Dr. Scholls white leather runners they are around 45 dollars and very comfy!

Hello everyone, browsed through this entire form and want to say congratulation to everyone who made the August intake! The waiting seemed extremely brutal.

I want to apply into the January 2015 Intake and was hoping for some insight on how to make my application stronger because I know my application won’t be strong enough at all for the August 2014 intake.

Right now I would be going in with

•Nursing Unit Assistant Certificate to be completed 2014- 24 Credits

•Medical Terminology I & II 2012 - 5 Credits

•Three first year classes 2011– 9 Credits English, Business Math and Psychology

•Three years Hospital and Mental Residence Volunteer work

•Previous unrelated work experience in Customer Service Atmosphere

Won’t know if all credits are transferable but hoping for the best.

First year college was a bad time. Went back and checked my GPA and it was around 2. After restarting school after over a year off, my cut off is 80% anything under is a fail so my GPA at this point is a solid 4.0 with half my Unit Assistant program to go.

Called up BCIT today and am planning to add English through my college as it transfers’ over as English 1177 and I plan to challenge the Anatomy and Physiology Exam in September.

My real question here is, what courses do you recommend to take in September other than the requirements? Is it a good idea to take LIBS 7001+7002? What were the other 2 electives others took?

Any and all feed back would be wonderful.

Thank you and Congratulations again!

Hi

I took LIBS 7001 and 7002 before I applied. I applied with lots of volunteer experience ( seems like you have that covered!). I also had a degree and had taken anatomy and physiology. That being said I think you only need 60+? credits to be competitive. It is possible to get in your first time applying and if not ask how you can improve. Goodluck:)

snnurse92,

Your credentials seem very well suited for the program and I think your application will be strong. I think taking any of the required LIBS courses is a smart idea. Doing so would not only makes your application more competitive, but it would also lessen your workload once you get into the program. However, it is possible to be accepted without having taken any of the LIBS electives, as I applied without them and was accepted. Good luck!

The dates for levels 1, 2, and 3 are:

Level 1 Monday, August 19 to Friday, December 13 (includes exam week)

Level 2 Monday, January 6 to Friday, May 9 (includes exam week). Spring Break March 10 to 14.

Level 3 Monday, August 18 to Friday, December 12 (includes exam week).

In case anyone is interested!
