BCIT August 2012

World Canada CA Programs

Hello everyone,I wanted to start this forum because I'm getting nervouse about my application to the BSN program at Bcit. I appled for this August (2012) and I am still awaiting a reply. Has anyone else applied? I would love to hear about your application so I have something to compare myself against and could know ways to improve. Please let me know:)Cheers!

Smiley65, how much anatomy gets covered in the program? I just have bio 12, and am wondering how much anatomy studying/reviewing i should do before August?! Thanks!

Rsohi- My group grads dec 2014, so being that you will be starting 6 months later, I am guessing you will graduate sometime in May 2015.? Just a guess :)

Sandy28- I only had bio 12 from 5 years prior so decided to take basic anatomy and physiology to brush up. I am glad that I did. The first 6 weeks of patho is pretty basic anatomy/terminology review- but that 6 weeks is very hectic!, patho moves quite fast for those of us with a non-science background, so it's really important that you stay on top of it. It is the foundation of your practice and will come into play in every aspect of your nursing career. I found anatomy arcade (website) fun for review, but it didn't help me much in retrospect. I suggest you enjoy your summer if you can and deal with it when classes start.......but if you are like me and can't wait to get going, pick up the essentials of patho book and start flipping through it. :) review cell physiology for sure. If you know you may struggle, or you feel like you are falling behind once you get going, or if you just want to be prepared, I suggest getting a study group together. You can reserve rooms in the library, even if it's just to go over notes.....try to get one of your classmates who naps during this class "because it's soooo easy" to come to your study group! Also, as soon as you have access to the course, I suggest downloading all of the instructors power points and printing them (4 slides per page) so you you have them in front you in class for taking additional notes!

If we buy the UCentral, does that mean we can skip the Delmar Nurse's Drug Hand book? Or any drug text/handbook that is required? Thanks!

Yes! You can skip Tabers' encyclopedic, the drug handbook, and manual of diagnostic lab tests

hey guys, classes are starting soon! have you all purchased your stethoscope&scrubs yet? I am a bit on the late side and have not purchased mine. Does anyone have any recommendations as to where I should buy these? Would I need a stethoscope on the first/second week?

I can't remember exactly when we first used our stethoscopes but it was right away. You will need it for your assessment course (1019) and of course clinical which starts in week 2 (although you don't use it on your first clinical day, it will boost your confidence in the room). There are 2 stores on broadway that sell scrubs. Uniform central and Image Care Uniforms, they both also carry stethoscopes. The BCIT bookstore also has some stethoscopes. Make sure your scrubs have LOTS of pockets....you will need all of them. I ordered my steth from stethoscopes.ca and got my named engraved on it :) (which was a good thing because there were quite a few black Littman's floating around in 1019)

Hi spellingbee, I would also suggest checking out marks work warehouse for scrubs!

Smiley28, thanks again for your advice! I will definitely be getting myself involved in a study group!

I mean Smiley65! Haha

Hi Everyone! I'm just wondering, does anyone know where to meet for the first class or first hour on the first day of school for level 1s? I haven't received an email regarding a finalized schedule yet. Do level 1s simply follow the tentative schedule posted on our mybcit.ca accounts?

I'm wondering if smiley65, or other nursing students who have gone through level 1 would know? Will level 1s be sent their schedule before the first day of classes?

Thank=). I'm excited!

Hey :)

Don't follow the schedule off of mybcit,(my schedule) it is not accurate because too many courses overlap. I think we met either in the gym or in the same room we had orientation, but don't worry, they will let you know :) you will get your schedule on the first day, as well as your adjusted schedule for the first week. There is alot of orientation stuff in the first week to your specific classes as well as the school. It is very exciting for you guys. Me too! Remember that there is lots of support if you get overwhelmed, and I am always happy to help if I can.

OK just double checked my email and I found that we received our info for the first day on the Friday before classes started. We were given info about where to meet our clinical instructor and clinical group. (This was funny because my group ended up going on a bit of a goose chase to find our correct room) We did that from 830 to 1030. Then we went to the gym to hand in final documents, finalize registration (bring 5 bucks for your name tags) get our schedule, and have our pic taken. Then we had lunch for an hour. After lunch we had our first patho class and more orientation.

That is Awesome info for us Level 1s Smiley65!!! Thanks so much for the heads up on everything you've been telling us now and in the past :). I emailed bcit nursing at the same time as my previous post here and they also had provided a prompt response saying exactly what you've said, that all level 1s should Not follow the schedule posted on mybcit.ca, but rather our individual schedules will be emailed to us by this Friday:w00t:. Hope all level 1s are excited for a new journey and all others continuing their studies in nursing are just as excited about returning and getting closer to finishing off their degree=).

Cheers:nurse:

no problemo! I am super excited for you guys too! I can't wait to get back at it....and actually have already started into reading for microbiology (yes huge nerd, I know) See you soon!! :yeah:
