CRNE OCTOBER 2012

World Canada CRNE

Published

Hi everyone! I am an IEN from the Philippines batch 2009 I moved here in Brampton last November 2010.

I took the May 2012 CPNRE (first time) and still waiting for the results which will come out on June. Apparently, I just received my RN eligibility and so happy because it took me almost 14months (from the start of application) to wait for this. I thought CNO will make me take some courses. I was really estatic and relieved when I received the letter, because I am really rooting for RN.

Now this is it! Anyone else who are planning to take the October CRNE? :)

Let's use this thread to share our thoughts regarding preparation and questions. :)

I PASSED my CRNE. I live in Vaughan, ON. This was my third and my last attempt and I put so much effort to nail this exam.

I want to give just couple of hints and tips to people who have studied and failed once or twice. If you continue to do (prepare yourself for the Exam) the same as you did before - the result will be the same. You can not expect different result if you continue to to the same thing again and again. When I failed 2 times - I realized the I do something wrong. I stopped reading the theory, P&P, MedSurg and started to read case scenarios and answer the questions (Of course I referred to these books couple of times as I need some info). I tried to understand the rationales why the correct answer is correct and why incorrect answers are incorrect. I went over 3000 questions and real life case scenarios. I timed myself which is a good thing (1 minute per question). And most important thing rely on Canadian preparation guides, books and case scenarios.

Almost forgot to say Good Luck to all who is waiting for the results and future takers of CRNE. Just be confident and believe in yourself.

Hai guys am new in this site..i lost my oct exam..am planning to write feb exam but i need some coaching class..can anyone suggest me with a good coaching centre from your experience. am from winnipeg but am writing exam in toronto..

Funny anecdote from when I found out I passed. My best friend happened to be with me at the time. I opened the letter, shrieked and jumped up and down. Then I said "Oh my god I passed! I think! Here, read this letter, does it say I passed? I'm awake right I'm not dreaming?" She read it and said, "Yup, you passed, oh my god congratulations!" Then we both shrieked and jumped up and down! I am glad we were alone in my apartment's lobby at the time! :) Anyway I thought it was funny. I am so happy, congrats to everyone who passed ,and if you didn't or are writing for the first time in February, you can do it, don't give up!

Hello All

I PASSED my CRNE. This was my third attempt : ( I was so scared to write it but I got a lot of courage from studying and taking a prep course. I took the prep course at Toronto School of Nursing with 3 other students. We all drove together. The instructor was amazing. She was a registered nurse with lots of experince. We all PASSED!!!!!!!!!! My friend took a prep course with another school and the instructor wasn't a nurse so watch where you take your prep course.

I studied the Care plans from my med surg book, I studied the entire compendium of standards by the CNO, I looked over my nursing foundations book and did lots of practice questions at the TSON.

I could not have done it with out this course, I really recommend it people!

Hello All

Congrats !!! we are on the same page. this was my 3rd attempt too. Hard work pays off!!! all the best! :)

Hello everyone

This is future writers. A little about myself. I graduated from a Canadian university in April and I was scheduled to write in June. When I started doing the practice questions I realized there was a HUGE gap in my knowledge so I deferred until October 2012 and passed on my first try. I also helped my friends prepare after they failed in June and they passed.

My tips:

1. Practice questions are NOT a substitute for reading your text books!! (Neither is the mosby comprehensive. I skimmed through the Mosby book at the end just to consolidate my knowledge). As you go through the CNA questions you will notice that many of the answers to the questions are found word for word in your textbooks. You can't answer questions without having knowledge as a foundation. Go through you Med-surg (Lewis et. al), Potter & Perry, etc. I also found Arnold & Boggs helpful for the psychosocial questions (and there are a lot)

2. Start reading early! I started reading about 3 months before the exam. If you don't have that much time don't panic! My friends started reading later and they were okay. Don't read to memorize, read to understand the content. Only 10% of the questions are knowledge based, which means 90% test your critical thinking/application. That means memorization will only help you with 10%! You must be able to apply what you are reading. Concept maps are a good way to learn different diseases. Go through your main disorders (they will be similar for children and adults)- DM, Stroke, MI, Kidney failure, Asthma, ICP/head injury, spinal injury, burns, etc. They are listed right in the competences. Going through each system also helps.

3. Understand the competencies. The competencies are helpful because they can guide your study. They tell you exactly what you need to know. ie: what disorders to focus on, what skills to know (trach care, chest tubes, immunization knowledge, picc line care, IV care, enemas, etc). If you use the competencies as a guide you won't have many surprises.

4. Don't focus only on changes in health. Many people get bogged down worrying about changes in health. This is a huge component and you must know your disorders (I got asked a few very specific questions pertaining to disorders). However, do not neglect the other sections. Many people don't study community enough, or don't take time to understand the professional practice/nurse-client relationship questions. These are NOT COMMON SENSE. Read through the CNO/RNAO best practice guidelines (If your not from Ontario you will obviously have a different college). This were very helpful for professional practice questions.

5. Practice questions: Many people depend too heavily on practice questions. Yes they are important but they should not be your only tool. I did practice questions about 5 weeks before my exam. I did about 100/day and sometimes less. I didn't find liptincott all that helpful. Mosby and the CNA 5th edition were most helpful. I also used CNA 4th edition but be cautious! Some of the literature has changed between the two editions.

6. Practice in groups if you can. This exam is about your ability to think like a nurse not memorize facts. Study with a group of people so that you can discuss your rationales together.

7. Always pay close attention to key words like priority action, initial action, etc. You will often find that many of the options in the multiple questions are correct but those key words will guide you to the correct answer. Always go back to the case study! In the scenario based questions always think about what type of patient you are helping. Circle key words like their age, the disorder, are they pre-op? Post-op? etc. ALWAYS REMEMBER YOUR ABCs! They come up again and again.

And don't panic. According to CNA statistics 87% of first time writers pass on their first try. That's means your chances of passing are very high! You just need to put the work in. Sorry this is so long. I know this test can be stressful. For me it meant the difference between keeping or losing my job. If you put the work in you won't find it difficult. I found it fairly easy but I did a lot to prepare. Goodluck!
