Many of you may not agree, and I'm sorry....but 3 chances to write the CRNE is more than fair, regardless of your circumstances. You need to achieve roughly 65 to 66 percent on the exam, in order to guarantee a pass. That is reasonable. The Colleges have a responsibility to the public to ensure a standard. And, I would think that all the prep courses or study aides should be utilized well in advance of appealing to write for a third or fourth time. I know some of you are probably very disappointed, but treat this as a learning experience. Perhaps nursing just isn't your path.

I am in the same boat. New to this. But I feel like no one is giving us much direction. If if I have to go back to school and take refresher course or what not why are the schools telling me I'm ineligible to enroll (makes sense why give out a 2nd degree in the same thing). There has to be a way and if anyone knows pls share with me. I'm writing the rpn may 18th. And when I pass @ least I'd be more patient in finding another alternative in re-writing the crne. And for those students who passed the exam and stating that the crne is a fair exam. Walk in my shoes for a day!

I think the College has given you direction you are not hearing it.

I have never taken the CRNE, but have completed the nursing boards in the USA. I would say going back to school would not be a great option, since you passed the program and failed the CRNE. While you think nursing is your only option, there are other opportunities in health care. Why go push to go in career that you don't have the aptitude for ? The CRNE judges your ability to practice nursing in Canada, by failing the test 3 times you have demonstrated you don't have the full grasp of the competencies to practice nursing safely in Canada.

Good luck on the RPN exam, if you can not pass that exam, I would say nursing is not for you. I would explore other careers in Health Care if you feel working in health care is your calling.

I would also provide feedback to your school, since they do have a responsibility to prepare graduate for professional practice and they did not prepare you. Good luck in whatever path you choose.

It annoys me when people say the CRNE is not fair, or that 3 chances are not enough. We must all abide by the standards. Some people make it, others do not. Life is not fair sometimes, but that's the way it is. Having to achieve 65 percent on a board exam is not unfair. Accountants, physicians, OT and dieticians also write similar exams. Some of them don't make it, either.

Consider yourselves fortunate to be allowed to write the PN exam. IMO, that isn't fair, and I'm sure many PNs agree. Why you should be allowed to write a similar exam is beyond me, but I'm not the decision maker. Remember, just because you got a degree this alone doesn't automatically entitle you a practice permit.

I'm one that feels that the CPNRE shouldn't be offered as a consolation prize to failed RN candidates. When I qualified, it was a requirement that candidates be graduates of a Pratical Nursing programme. Now it seems as if Provincial Colleges are saying "got a pulse, and education, OK, come try and pass". It's wrong and demeaning to every Practical Nurse graduate out there.

My health authority is home of the infamous 2008 IEN recruiting drive. We know that some IENs failed CRNE 3x, and went on to fail CPNRE 3x.

Yet, any time an experienced LPN with additional education suggests being able to write the CRNE, we're shouted down as being out of our depth, delusional, etc.

Exactly Fiona. So fairness goes both ways. I had to comment when I read on the previous page something to the effect of "walk in my shoes, those who say the CRNE is fair" or whatever.

I DID walk in your shoes, poster. I applied myself in clinicals and studied diligently ALL nursing concepts for 4 weeks. So did my group of friends. We worked hard and passed. It's not a free ride. After your 3 chances, that should be it.

Wow!!! I never said that the CNO "standards" were unfair, its merely the fact that I'm willing to update my knowledge to practice safely according to the competencies. Hence, why I'm in search of schooling to better myself. One test (whether written three times or not) does not mean my four years of money spent, grades earn, and degree gained: mean I'm an idiot as to how you guys are making me sound like. I pity your patients as a matter of fact, because if these are the response you guys have for me (someone in hope of fulfilling a dream), I can imagine how you are telling your dying patient "life isjust unfair". Also I totally can see where writing the rpn as an alternative is very controversial. And I'm greatful that I have that much of an apportunity to continue nursing as a career. Like I stated in my blog, I'm TRYING to determine which schools well allow me to re-take the nursing program in order to be FAIRLY eligible to write the CrNe that's all I'm asking for. P.s Happy Nurses Week.

No one has said or implied that you are an idiot. I'm sure you aren't. But you're missing the point, and standards are there for a reason. The exam is set as one measure to protect the public, not you, the nurse. You have the degree, yes. But we all know entering the program that there's a board exam to pass at the end. Whether you think it's fair or not is irrelevant. The majority of people pass the CRNE within those 3 chances. If you don't, perhaps nursing is not for you. The Colleges have to set a limit somewhere.

Furthermore, just because I am not in agreement with you, and I have a certain opinion regarding the CRNE is not a reason to speculate on mine, or any other nurses patient care. We are speaking of two different entities, and you are not my patient. I have empathy for you, not sympathy. When you post, keep in mind that people may offer a response that you don't care for, or agree with.

Thanks for the opinions guys. I'm well aware of the CNO's goal to protect the client and I appreciate your responses.

first I'd like to say i'm so sorry about you failing your exam for the third time.

I don't think you are meant to do anything else. you have a 4 year degree and there is just one exam in the way of your career.

first off, you may be having issues with test taking. I am not sure what it is but I would recommend going to a doctor and seeing if you have anxiety or something like that.

when I was in one of my clinicals my instructor told me a story about a student of hers that failed the CRNE 3 times. she finally went to a doctor and realized she had severe anxiety during major exams. he ended up writing a letter to have her tested a different way. she received an oral test from CARNA and passed. she had all of the knowledge to be a RN but froze when taking written exams.

I just think you should not give up, this does not mean you don't have the knowledge or skill to be a RN

good luck:redpinkhe
