New camp nurse

by mrscmt

Hello, I am new to allnurses and I am going to be new to camp nursing. I will be a camp nurse this summer for my first time at an all boys private camp. Do you have any tips, tricks, ideas or other information that my help? Thanks!

As I tell everyone... read The Basics of Camp Nursing! Take a copy to camp--it's invaluable.

When you arrive at camp, see if you can get a copy of last year's health center records. It'll give you an idea of what health needs the camp has and what the standards of care are.

Remember that the campers are there to have fun... don't keep them in the health center unless it's really, really necessary.

I could probably go on for a while--any specific questions?

for anything out of the ordinary that needs additional medical attention ie going to hosp going to MD ..always call the parents I let them know not to worry but I am taking little joey to the er (sometimes you have to get permisson before you go ) once I am back I call them or even on the way back if little joey has cell phone I have him call and then give me the phone that way they have talked to him and me and are reassured ..keep them in the loop and if there are challenges of any kind ..i.e:he vomits after 3rd Period every day..talk over ideas w/ them they are your allies and this is their kid!. Also in staff training and as counselors bring the kids in em phasize check the feet ..clean!!!..clean socks..dont wait till they have 20 blisters that could have been prevented!..prevention is so important and good counselors want to work with you ..just give them some heads up on things that would seem basic to us..have fun!:Melody:
