I was volunteered as camp nurse-HELP!

by moz

I volunteered to go to kids camp with our church, as a counselor. They told me tonight that they were sending me as the camp nurse!!!!!! ARG! I have no idea what to expect, all I know is its a small camp, about 100 kids ages 7-11. What questions do I need to ask before I go- I am especially concerned about liability.
I would greatly appreciate any help you could give...thanks!

Moz,
You might want to check out www.campnurse.org, there is a list of questions to ask camps under the link for camp nursing jobs.
I always ask for a copy of the standing orders, if I can be active in camp activities or if I am expected to stay in the infirmary all the time, and if there are scheduled infirmary times.
Hope this helps!

You would want to find out what protocols are in place, what support is available (Dr. close by premises, assistants or relief help that may be "hired with you" or volounteer), I would suggest making sure you have a system in place for homesick campers for night call, time off for yourself, and try to get a scheduled sick call (after meals works well if the eating area is close to the infirmary).

Have fun with the program and let us know if you need anything else. Check back wit hus and let us know how your experience went.

It was AWESOME! I really enjoyed it and would do it again. I loved the kids, especially my frequent fliers. They were not well organized though, had very few supplies and no protocols of any kind- if I have the opportunity to go to that camp again I'll be making some changes and be better prepared. Did I mention that I reeeeeeaaaaaally liked it?? Thanks y'all.

I am so glad for you that you had a great time.

Last year, when I camped nurse for the first time, I read a bok to prepare me for the 'experience". Well, it was SO totally different; nothing "really prepared me for the experience. Iwas lucky in that the camp was already well organized but there were many things I would have liked to have seen run differently.

This year, I wanted to Camp Nurse again. The camp I had felt was going to be a good choice was not for our little family. We were lucky to be able to drive down and check it out in person prior to making a commitment.

I hope to be able to find a camp uext summer if my job permits us to do so.

Thanks for chekcing back with us and letting us know. Good luck with next years plans.
