Estimated amounts of Supplies for Infirmary

I tried posting this another way and got no responses, so I'm hoping this will work. I am new to being a camp nurse and need to do the purchasing of supplies for the health center. We are starting from "scratch" this year and while I think I have the basic list of things needed (thanks to this site and a couple of good reference books) I can find no information on how much of things to purchase, (ie, how many boxes of band-aids etc.) I realize this will vary some what, but I don't even have a general idea at this point. The camp is a week long and there will be about 60 pre-teen campers and about 40 staff. HELP....any information from other more experienced nurses out there would be great! I need to do the purchasing by Wednesday Thank you!

I don't really know, I have done youth camp going on my 3rd year (it is a one week Baptist youth camp for teens), and every year I am scared to death lol... I do have a partner in crime w/ me thank God! Anyway - the nurses station is stocked and I don't really know what we use (I should find out).

I hope it goes well for you!!! This forum is good for camp nursing.

I suppose you could look around the different threads and if you see a post from a nurse with experience, who sounds like she might have suggestions, maybe send her a private message and ask if she knows or if she is aware of a resource. There is not very frequent activity on these threads but maybe you could get hold of someone.

the link won't work for that: here is what you probably will need fro a week long camp:

1 of ea 2", 3", 4" ace wrap,

1 btl bactine,

1 box baking soda,

1 box 3/4 " flex fabric bandaids,

1 box 2" x 4" flex fabric bandaids,

1 box flex fabric knuckle bandaids,

1 box quart size zip lock bags ( to make ice packs),

1 btl calamine lotion,

1 btl bug spray,

1 btl aloe, 1

2 btls sunscreen,

1 btl eye wash

1 btl contact soln,

1-2 bags cough drops,

1 btl tylenol ( reg strength)

1btl motrin,

tums,

tweezers,

1 bx alcohol preps,

sanitary supplies,

stethescope,

b/p cuff,

thermometer and sleeves,

1 roll tape,

1 box 4x4's ,

tissues,

pen light,

a few tongue depressors,

1 btl benadryl,

CPR sheild,

1 large basin,

TAO, and a box of gloves.

I keep a bottle of anti monkey butt powder ( calamine powder), it works great for itchy rashes.

obviously check with your med director on what can be administered...we have an OTC sheet signed by the camper's Doc before they come to camp.....

I am going to ask the staff to make this a "sticky note" (a way they have to keep this thread to the top of the forum topics list) so people can come back to it more easily!

I got quite a laugh out of "anti monkey butt powder"!!! ha ha! (does that refer to the fact that when you apply it, kids stop scratching their butts?? ROFL!!)

believe it or not, there is actually a product called anti monkey butt powder...it really does work on itchy stuff...google it, the pic on the bottle is hoot :)

bsyrn--excellent list! I would add to it some kind of wet wipes (NOT alcohol) so that you can clean cuts and scrapes outside of the health lodge/infirmary/nurse's office; also a few instant cold compresses. Make sure you have the number for the nearest poison control center and memorize it if you can.

Something you DON'T want on the list is PeptoBismol--stick with TUMS or Mylanta for stomach problems. Pepto has a salicylate component and shouldn't be given to children.

P.S. I probably shouldn't have come to the camp nurse section...now I'm getting homesick! Having a "Real Job" is not nearly as much fun as working at camp.

Hey it's not too late! I am always so surprised how close to the season (or even mid-season) they are advt for nurses!
