2014 camp work thread

Specialties Camp

Published

Hi all, I just signed my 2014 contract, negotiations went very well., I will be returning to Camp Indian Head for my fourth season. IHC is a residential camp, of about 600 campers and staff. It is located in northeastern PA, with a 7 week season. We have no special needs that would not be found in a normal school population. I thought I would start another work thread. So please feel free to post anything about getting or having a camp job in 2014. As always I hope to increase communication across what seems to be a very isolated field. If you don't feel comfortable posting the name of your camp, please post any details you feel able to share.

If your new to the field you may want to check out some of the suggested reading on allNurses A camp nurse job description and info piece. https://allnurses.com/camp-nursing/camp-nursing-885302.html

Good luck , I hope to hear from you all.

I just had Lymphadecectomy on my femoral/inguinal nodes for Metastatic Melanoma (had a tumor removed from that same knee 2 yrs ago) I am hoping to be able to return to Eagle Springs Programs again this summer (this would be my 6th yr!) if I get the ok to go. I am most likely going to need Chemo, so I am hoping to be strong enough by then. ESP is a special needs camp that has been in existence for more than 30 yrs. I love the vacationers, the staff (mostly international students) and my friend to owns the camp.

I am excited to say that I will be working at Camp Albrecht Acres this summer! It turns out, the director of nursing there is someone I have known for at least 10 years - she is the parent of some of the first kids I taught when I began teaching here in 2004. As a new LPN I will not be the only nurse there for med pass times, and it sounds like they are willing to be flexible with scheduling. I live very close to camp so will not be staying on the camp site for the whole season... they are building their team of nurses for the summer, so the schedules will evolve as the team is formed! Sounds like there are many nurses who have been there year after year.

I am excited for this new adventure!!! If you want to come to Iowa and work the season, they are still hiring... here is their website:

Camp Albrecht Acres

The camp is for individuals (mostly children) with special needs.

Hi all.

I have just accepted a position in Northern Wisconsin near where I summer with my family in Minocqua. I am a new grad RN, graduated in October and have had a struggle finding a nursing position. I am hoping these 2 months will count as experience as I apply for jobs while I am there and hopefully secure a hospital position for the fall. There will be 2 other healthcare staff, an experienced RN and a paramedic.

Any tips, good books, articles for me? I am nervous, but excited.

Where in minocqua are you going to be cuz I'm going to be in woodruff .small world!!

This will be my first year as a camp nurse. I will be working at a boy's camp in Maine. The camp will have approx. 160 campers and 60 staff members. I am a psych nurse so have been busy refreshing my knowledge in other areas. I am grateful for the opportunity!

I'll actually be in Rhinelander this Summer, but grew up Summering in Minocqua and Lac du Flambeau so I know the area well. I almost applied to Camp Timberlane too!

Wint, which camp in Maine? I will be at Camp Androscoggin in Wayne, another all boys camp. Returning for my 20th summer so think of Maine as my second home. Hope you enjoy your summer

I will be working in Fayette, Maine. Androrn, what types of injuries do you find you deal with most at an all boys camp and are there certain species I should watch out for in Maine...certain spiders, etc? Glad to have someone not far away!

I guess I'll introduce myself here- I just joined, just for this group.

I'm a per-diem MICU nurse with a work history of acute care pediatrics and pedi private duty.

I'm also a girl scout leader.

So I'll be giving camp nursing a try this year at a local girl scout camp.

It will be myself and an EMT. She'll be living in, I'm about 30 minutes away. We'll both be there for the full 8 week season. We're both new to this...so...deep breath...

Next weekend is my camp's open house. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone- potential campers and staff alike. Hoping for a glimpse at my health room, too! I know it can be reserved by camping troops in the off-season so I'm not sure if I can check it out.

looking forward to everyone's tips and wisdom!

I don't know how Girl Scouts work, but if they are at all similar to BSA then meds are handled at the troop leader level. This along with short seasons usually means less med, and chronic issues, but more paperwork, and emergency response.

And I don't know Boy Scout camps, lol Girl Scout camps often have a program season- this is the 8 weeks I'll be attending. Any girls registered as Girl Scouts may attend as individuals. Many are troop members during the school year or year round, others have no troop affiliation, they just like to attend camp. So, like most camps, there are young counselors guiding them through programs centered in the week's general theme. Only staff as the adults. So I will be responsible for all meds.

Big Al, since you work in PA, can you point me in the right direction to find our state regulations on med administration at camp? I'll be meeting with a program director of a sister camp who us also an emt and has info for me but I like to be prepared! I just didn't find what I wanted as I was digging around online but I don't know where to look- RN practice act, EMS, camp standards, etc. I don't mind doing my own homework, but where?

Wow I have never heard of a Girl Scout camp with an 8week program. As I said admittedly I'm not overly familiar with GSA, not being a girl or a scout.

As far as EMTs and medication administration... Oh boy. Here's the resources your looking for. I'll let you draw your own conclusions. If you look back through the forum this topic has been discussed previously, although not specific to the state of pa.

The BLS protocols are what the EMTs practice under

Here are the pa regulations on youth camps. They are quite scant.
