When to start applying? San Diego

U.S.A. California

Published

After reading the posts here, I almost wish we weren't moving to San Diego. Unfortunately, as a military spouse I have no say in the matter, so Im keeping my chin up :)

We will be moving in the June/July time frame next year. I have my BSN and two years of acute care experience. I know the market is tight, but Im committed to trying my best! I know I'm a strong nurse, fast learner, and have great communication skills.

My question is, how early should I start applying? I see so many posts that say it took 7 months up to a year to get a job. I want to start the process in advance, but not too early. I've been looking at jobs posted and see several that I qualify for, but I feel like it may be too soon to apply. Does anyone have insight/experience to share in this area? TIA

If you aren't available to start for another 9 months, I'd say start applying 1 month before your anticipated move but keep in mind that you would still need to fly into town for an interview if you want to be considered, even for a delayed start date.

Thank you so much for your response! That makes complete sense :)

If you don't have a CA license yet...even though you have a few months before you arrive, start the process to get your license now. You're going to have to send in fingerprints and nursing school transcripts.

I didn't apply until a month after I arrived here (had to unpack all those boxes first), and was hired within a month of starting the search. Then again, I'm in psych which many people run screaming from, not to. If you're looking for med-surg, ICU, L&D, etc., you're going to have a lot more competition, so do what SoCalGalRN said and apply about a month out before arrival.

Thanks for the feedback. I know we will only be there a couple years, so I'm flexible with working any unit/job I can get.
