I'll be graduating from LVN school in November and want to go on to an LVN-RN program. I haven't done any RN pre-requisites and, at age 50, don't want to take the time to do so... so I'm looking for a program with "built in" pre-reqs. I'm curious about West Coast University but can't find much info about it. Please tell me what you know about it... thanks!

i would choose a state program and would do a RN-"mobility" option which is the 30 unit option. Only California accepts this so if you plan on moving out of state not for you. But they are usually 30 unit options. Lots of community colleges have it and most of CSU's have it. you have to either call them of try and find it on their website. You will save thousands of dollars by doing the RN-mobility option rather then paying that school thousands!

I'm seriously considering going there as well.

Been trying to get as much info as I can. A co-worker of mine goes there and he loves it. Read the following threads:

Hope this helps!

gillijr1001- Thank you for the very wise advice. The cost is definitely staggering, and that's a huge consideration. Sadly, staying in California isn't a definite for me, so I can't risk going with the "RN mobility" option, particularly at my age.

wooosp- Thank you for the links! I looked but wasn't able to find them. Glad to hear that your coworker attends and is happy. He is the first person I've heard of that actually goes there. I think I need to do some deep digging for grants, etc.

Thank you again to both of you for your replies!

Hey We'll See! It's always nice to see another 'mature' student. I'm sure you will find the right program for you. Hang tough! I'm in central CA at (well not anymore...LOL...just graduated) a CSU school, and I don't think we do the 30 unit option. Research that first in any case. Good luck to you.

I am currently attending at West Coast University and I think I am liking it. I had few subject that credited and sure help to lower the cost. I like the way that I don't have to wait to be in the program. For the past 2 years I have been waiting in community college. First I decided to stop working and be fulltime student. Apparently I have lost 50,000 up annual income for 2 years and still haven't done close to the program. then I decided to go to WCU. The class is 10 weeks each term, depending on the subjects you took or not. if you need to take all the subject it will take you 18months. You meet once a week for 3 unit subject and meet twice for major sciences. it is tough because it is fast track. But instructors are very helpful. Sometimes you get frustrated with few instructors or system. but I dont think that there are flawless schools out there. I have been doing good so far as long as I keep track on my readings and reviewing ( which we must do anyway). I met some of the nurses that graduated there and they all pass it the first time. So far I am liking the way it is. I don't have to think of getting in the program, buying book ( financially because it is inclusive), not worry of getting the subject I need because you have aspace alloted for you only and most of all you get to talk to the instructor. I have seem collegues working full time and yet going to school. so it can happen. WCU is a good school but it all depends also to student itself.

I just read this after having been away for awhile, and I thank you for your responses and encouragement.

I'm all set to begin classes at WCU at the beginning of February, and I'm so excited and nervous!

Kithzeez, how long have you been a student at WCU? Do you have any advice?

Hello to you too, Mudget. Yup, nice to see fellow oldies, haha. Since I'm not sure we'll be staying in California, the 30-unit option isn't for me. Would sure be alot cheaper, though. What point are you at in your education?

Just hoping I can survive the traffic through LA :icon_roll

This is my 5th term going 6th term which med surge. I just finished my transitions HESI test. I passed ( good thing). Right now they lift the passing for the transition HESI for 760 for 2 takes. before it was 700 only with 3takes. meaning if you didn't pass the 1st time you can take it the second. if you still did not pass you will repeat the term.

We'll See, my advice is that just go along with the program. don't listen to the complaint of others because for sure you will hear it a lot. Get ready for a fast pace course. If you are taking anatomy, Physiology, Chemistry, and Microbiology. Expect a lot of memorization. Psychology is really a pain but hey I survived. Again I am saying this because each term is a 10 week program with 2 to 3 subjects. meeting per subject is once a week. Absents are allowed up to 3 but you will miss a lot lectures. and 30% of your grade. Study, Study, Study! You are paying mucho dinero here and playing around is all up to you. Oh! and if you repeated the course it is $3,000 additional. if it is a term $9,000. I tend to think it that way so that I have motivation of not to fail. ha ha ha! Where WCU you going?

Goodluck to you and your success!!!

We'll See, One more thing stay away from the people that loves to ***** and complaint. It is contagious, the next thing you know you are busy complaining, thinking that you are the victim and you forgot to study. Those people that infected you cannot do anything if you fail. They will not pay for your tuition fees.

Kithzeez, thank you for the useful and practical advise! School will be expensive enough without having to pay to repeat a course, thanks for the heads-up.

Sadly, LVN school was full of whiners who complained about everything and couldn't understand why the program couldn't be structured to fit better into their schedules. I often wondered what they were expecting when they signed on.

At any rate, complainers don't bother me unless I can't get away from them. I don't have the energy to do alot of it myself as I am very competitive and study alot!

It sounds like you're doing very well, you must be really excited! When do you graduate and do you also have a job? If so, has the scheduling been an issue?

My classes will be at the Rosewood campus, a straight shot down the 101 from Ventura County, but I'm not thrilled about the traffic.

Also, have you taken any of the courses online? I'm scheduled for an online English class and, while I'm not thrilled to have to pay extra for it, I think it's worth it to have flexibility and to have less commute time. Comments?

Thanks again!!

We'll See, That's where I go too. so you are just starting. If the online works for that will be good but I I heard from classmates that Sociology and Psychology and Lifespan online is very hard. I took Psychology with Biggerstaff and he really tough. he does the online and I heard they are all essay type. But if you okey with it that will good too. English is nothing bad thing about the online you wont be able to see the cutest intructor ever.. matt yamashita. hahaha although was really tough in the sense that I hate oral presentation. be prepared though most of the class requires oral presentation. I am ok so far. I am struggling too with my studies. No, I do not work that is why I have no reason to complain. But I have collegues that are mother of 5 works fulltime and still manage to maintain an A in all the classes. So who am I to complain, right? What i am saying is that it can work. Schedule wise, since you are still on your prereqs I think you will do fine till term 7 because term 7 requires you to be in clinical 8hrs x 2 days and 2 lecture days. but other that that you will be fine. since you are only in school for 1 day or two I suggest not to buy parking. you can park in streets just look on the signs. unless you are really picky or come to school right on time. I come to school early so I can get a good parking. $75 is too much for me. I paid $75 three times. But this term I chose to park on the street and never got a ticket. as long as I look at the cleaning days and the 2 hr parking only.

I might see one time in class. good luck

Haha, that's exactly who I have for English! Oral presentations in all classes, eh? Lovely.

I'm glad you're doing so well, you can be my inspiration. As for parking, I've been debating paying the fee, too. The thing is, this term I'll be on campus only on Wednesdays... from 1:30-10:30. I'm a little nervous about walking alone at that hour to my car. I understand that there's a shuttle to the student parking lot, right?

Orientation is tomorrow, and yeah, I'm nervous!
