Sending Transcripts to Nursing Schools

U.S.A. California

Published

Hello Everyone,

I was given bad news today.

My situation was that I have done very bad in a CSU that I used to go to. My GPA there went from a 3.5 to a 2.2 (had a bad situation and didn't finish my third semester in second year).

I wanted to "start over" and take classes at a community college in LA county and just transfer this transcript to a nursing program. HOWEVER LAVC is asking for all of my transcripts even my CSU paper.

I called CSU and a counselor have told me that the nursing programs should have no business with the CSU transcript since it is confidential info.

Do you think LAVC will find out that I took classes at a CSU? Do you know of any nursing programs (public not private; in other words, community colleges that might not care for my CSU transcript?)

This seems like a v. odd statement to me, since colleges and universities routinely ask applicants to submit transcripts from all previous schools attended, and that gets done all the time without anyone suggesting that that's an inappropriate request. Your CSU transcript is "confidential" info in the sense that the school can't release it without your permission/request, but it's extremely common and routine for people to ask schools to send transcripts to other schools they want to attend. Any other school you may want to attend, now or in the future, will certainly feel that your performance at this school is information they need to have.

It's hard to tell whether or not another school will find out that you took courses at this school. If you applied for and received federal financial aid to attend your current school, a "new" school may find out about that if you apply for aid through the "new" school. If you apply to a school that requests the transcripts from all previous schools you've attended and you don't tell them about your current school, and they find out about that, that would typically be considered academic dishonesty and a valid reason to not accept you.

Unfortunately you HAVE to submit ALL of your transcript. Google National Student Clearinghouse, that is how schools find out if you attended elsewhere.

Thanks Guys,

I will just retake the class and boost my grade up since LAVC said I can do that.

@ jjic3982,

So does that mean that you are not turning in your CSU grades? I have a similar issue with the UC I went to and now trying to apply to nursing school. I didn't do horribly bad and managed to get a decent B, B- average but I would really like to try and get A's at a community college. Not reporting ALL transcripts may be dishonest, but what did your CSU say about your transcripts? You can elect to use those credits or not?

I think that the financial aid office may know which schools you attended but that's only for disbursement issues. They will never ask for your transcripts/grades. They already know how many units you have taken and how much financial aid you will have/have left. I see the problem more with Records and Admissions.

Anyone's Financial Aid or Records ask for transcripts or have had a similar issue?

I am in the same boat. I did engineering at cal poly and ended up giving up as I got layed off. Bad year for me.

I went from a 3.5 to a 2.8 so I mean luckily most schools just look at pre req grades (which have all As in) and if cumulative.is even looked at, its not worth much. It's important that you get all As in your pre reqs especially science ones.

For an example, CSULA looks at 6 pre req grades and the teas as 2/3 of the points. So as long as you cumulative is above a 3.0 I think your good
