San Francisco State Nursing Program

U.S.A. California

Published

Hello everyone. I'm new to this WONDERFUL site. :yeah:

I was just recently accepted to the clinical program at SF State for Spring 09. I have a couple of friends that start their clinical programs this fall and they have decided to take pharmacology this summer to help lighten their first semester course load. I checked the summer course catalog at SF State and they offer pharmacology this summer. My questions is should I try to get into the class? Would taking the class this summer be helpful in getting a head start on my first semester?

To all past and current students of the program... are there any huge pitfalls that I should keep an eye out for? I have no clue what to expect during my first semester so any info would be greatly appreciated!

Ohh... one last thing. Can we use calculators in the program?

thanks for the information. please share more about your experience at sfsu nursing school.... here are some questions for ya! thanks :-)

-what were the requirements for initial medical checkup?

-did they have restriction on the type of stethoscope students can buy? -what about books? i read something about a "bundle books" in the bookstore... how would you suggest we go about getting text books?

-uniforms was it all white scrubs? and white leather shoes? i apologize for all the questions, orientation is not until july, so want to get an idea of what to expect. thanks

-do you get to chose where you want to do your clinicals?

in your last semester you do a preceptorship where you partner with a working nurse for a certain number of hours, i forget how many exactly. you are a preceptee, i am a preceptor. most students try to do it in an area of particular interest because they are often hired there.

Hi everyone! :nuke:

I plan on applying to San Francisco State's nursing program as well. I'm also applying to UCLA's MECN program and probably several other schools. Could anyone that has been accepted to SFSU let me know what your applicant profile looked like? I have A's in everything except Microbiology (a B) and Anatomy (a C). I'll be taking Chemistry this summer and Physiology this fall and will try very hard to get A's in both...pray for me....LOL! I also volunteer at two different hospitals: Hoag and CHOC.

My BA's are in English Literature and Philosophy with a Religious Studies emphasis....graduated Magna Cum Laude.

I'm still really worried that the B and the C might be a huge problem

Please tell me I don't have to be perfect in every way to get into a GOOD nursing program!

CMCRN, Thanks for taking the time to respond. BTW: what unit are you stationed in at CPMC? Thanks

Hi,

I also got my acceptance at SFSU nursing program for this fall 2008. I am as excited as you are. I also have some questions and hope the other seniors and experience students can help answer my question.

Can anyone help me by giving tips how to study. I received package information by email last Friday and it mentioned there is going to be ATI test for nursing (different than regular ATI test I had taken). Did anyone have experience this and is there any books can help to prepare for this ATI test. In addition in the information package there is also sample test about drug calculation that we have to submit the first day of instruction. Do we have to memorize the formula and the conversion.

Thank you,

thank you,

ladyrafflesia,

i am in the same boat as you. got the package, last week and revisions today. from reading the package, it is my understanding that the ati testing will be an ongoing process. notice that the test areas covered reflect the different classes taken in different semesters. the only preparation we will have is to attend lectures, labs and study study study! the material we will be tested on is nursing related. if anyone has more to add, please do!

did you see the fee for ati?

hello, just wanted to add... the package comes with books and dvds of each topic. after each semester, you will take a computerized ati exam which now counts for 10% of your final grade. the exam, imo, is mostly content material, 60 all mc questions. you get access to practice questions. exam questions are mostly from the book or dvd.

the program does nothing to motivate students to study for the ati (ati was not in any of the midterms/finals and counted only 3% in my year) so students would just study the days before exam or wing it, and remediate. no big deal. now sfsu is trying to somehow get students to be serious about this by upping up to 10%... hope this helps.
