Sac State and CSU Stanislaus launch ABSN in Stockton

U.S.A. California

Just wanted to get the word out there that Sacramento State and CSU Stanislaus are launching an accelerated second bachelor's program for nursing. The first class is supposed to start August 2011 and the program is 15 months long. Classes are supposed to be held in Stockton. The downside is that the cost is $35K. You can register your interest on the CSU Stanislaus extended learning website.

I'm hoping that I can apply to Sac State. I may just submit my app anyway. (It's possible that they could consider me as having two science pre-reqs right now.) But my first choice is probably the Stanislaus/Sac ABSN - mainly because it is 15mos. Also applying to CSUSM and then a couple of out of state schools, but that really increases the fees, so unlikely that I will go. Don't know if you know, but the Stanislaus/Sac program goes up for the final approval on 3/10, so there will hopefully be more info after that. How about you? Any others besides CSUSM and Sac?

@mxmestiza - do you know if Sac will accept TEAS version IV?

sorry for the late reply! yes, they accept both the iv and the v. my teas iv score is higher than the v so i submitted that. i also applied to csu stan, csu channel islands, and two community colleges in sacramento.

urgent question btw - when you paid for the sac state nursing application fee, what student ID did you use? the lady in the nursing dept couldn't help me yesterday and financial services refused to take my payment without a student ID # on the payment form. since i'm a second bachelor's student, i don't have a student ID.

I haven't paid yet. I am scrambling on this one because I just realized that I could apply. But I am in the same situation as you, so I wouldn't have an ID either. Wait - the form clearly says leave blank for 2nd bachelors. She didn't wish to read that?

ugh i just saw it in red on the form! i think my printer didn't print out the red part so the financial services girl didn't believe me when i tried to pay! back to sac state tomorrow ....

At least you can get it done and it will be there! I have to rely on postmarks, but it should all be postmarked 2/28!

Hey...I'm also applying to CSUS. How many points do you guys have & how are your TEAS scores?

Oaktown - I'm not sure that they'll accept having 2 science prereqs in progress. You should call and find out before you go thru the trouble of paying the fee and doing all the app stuff.

How is it that people expect you NOT to work? We are bachelor holders and CAN'T receive financial aid due to our degrees, so how are we supposed to support ourselves? I did a LVN program and I had to work because I couldn't afford NOT to work. Getting into any RN program has been thing but frustrating over on my end.

you can get student loans as a second bachelor's student but usually not grants the caveat is that you cannot have over the federal limit (i think it's around $54K for federal student loans). also, i think another limitation is you cannot hold a degree higher than what you are trying to study for. for example, those with bachelor degrees cannot get financial aid for an associate degree program. in my case, trying to get an ADN would prove more financially difficult than trying to get a BSN because loans are not available to me (i would need to rely on savings and family to pay for everything). that's why i'm focusing more on BSN programs because loans are available. i want to try to just use federal loans ($12,500 max per year for independent students and depending on the school there may be an additional $4-5K under another federal loan program) and stay clear from private student loans. so it's possible Nurse Cubanita!

Thank you for that information. That is something that I didn't know of. What type of federal student loans can we get? Is there a particular type of federal student loan?

There are Stafford (aka Direct) loans available up to $12,500/year for independents, the limits are lower for dependent students. Some schools also offer Perkins loans for an additional $5,500/year. Both do not require credit checks. Beyond these, your other loan options are just through private lender which all require credit checks but with less protections and less generous repayment options.

oh sorry i forgot to add this one - there is something called a Nursing Student Loan (NSL) offered through the government but I think the loan limit per year on this is even smaller than the Perkins loan limit. And I'm not sure you can get both the NSL and Perkins. You'll probably want to speak with a financial aid person at the schools you're interested in for more details.
