LA Pierce College Nursing Students...feedback

U.S.A. California

I was just accepted into LA Pierce College's Generic ADN program for fall 2013 and I am just curious as to how current or former nursing students liked the program? Are the resources and instructors good? There really is not much posted about this program on allnurses...any feedback would be appreciated!! Thank you!

Yeah the NLN accredited is making me lean towards Pierce more too because now tht the job market is really bad. I want to have as many options as possible. Since Pierce is NLN accredited and if its going to open more ways for me to get a job (cause like I said some hospitals look at that). I think it's the right decision to choose Pierce. It's up to you if you feel like Gcc is better for you then go with that. I also heard GCC program is good too! Talking so someone who actually is going there right now made me feel a lot better about Pierce :)

I agree with you, whether the NLN status is a big deal for certain positions or not it doesn't hurt to have it just in case. Like you, I want to choose what is going to allow more opportunities, because my understanding is that NLN is more important for federal/gov't hospitals and agencies, VA hospitals, and non-profits like Kaiser. I don't want to limit myself right out of the gate in nursing school. I think I am going to go with Pierce. Maybe it was just the sudden opportunity with GCC that came up and because I did like the program it caused me to take a seat on the fence and contemplate my options...I am so glad you were able to speak with someone in the program at Pierce currently and share the feedback and reassurance. I think that really helps because it seems like there are posts about every school except the one I got into and that made me a little nervous to be honest, but its probably just nerves because its new and its a pretty big deal in terms of future. Thank you for giving some perspective on things, makes me feel much better!

No problem :) Ill let you know if I hear anything else!

I PM'd you as well if you could send me the convo.

Are you still debating whether to go to Moorpark or Pierce?

Congrats to all on getting into the Pierce Nursing Program. I just finished the first semester there and it was quite an enjoyable experience. Number one advice is to Read and Read and Read (especially if you don't have a medical background) Number two-Don't be absent more than once or be consistently late. A few students were dropped because of that.

It's going to be a lot, and I mean a lot of info in the first few weeks but everything will settle and you'll understand their expectations. I'll check back on this site from time to time and to give more advice.

Thanks for posting, and the information! Intel is always wanted lol!

Did you receive your book list yet? If so, I may be able to help out if they are still using the same books from last semester. PM me.

West Hills, Tarzana, and St. Joe's in Burbank. and NO, you don't get to choose :/

Oh ok thank you! and yes we will be busy! Oh god, I'm kind of nervous though lol

So I'm "not allowed" to send private messages yet until I post 15 quality topics.

So here is the reply to your message.

You have to finish the class with a 76%. So you can get a 70 and pass the rest.

N400 Fundamentals-tests are based on her slides and little from the book. But please read the book if you have no medical background. It can mean the difference between an A and a B.

MEDICATION CALCULATION QUIZ: given within the first month. you HAVE to pass with a 92%. you get 3 attempts. I got an 88% the first try, then 96% on the second attempt. only 1 out of 40 in our class failed out from the med calculation quiz.

N402-Pharmacology. The first test is all basic math and drug/IV rate calculations. the rest of her tests are from book and slides. She likes to ask a lot of adverse reaction questions.

N407-Gerontology. Read the chapters once THEN go back and read her key points in the syllabus. Her tests are NCLEX style so the first few tests most will do very bad but she knows that. But keep reading!

N408-Psychosocial. She goes by her book and slides. Seems fairly easy but again, same teacher from Gero, so she goes into detail and are NCLEX styled.

408 has a few projects. Most will get 90's just for the effort.

Also, 407 and 408 have weekly 5-question reading quizzes at the start of each class. She just wants to make sure you are reading before class. Those quizzes and homework will account for 15% of your grade..so try to do well on them.

:)
