Is my GPA competitive enough?

Hello everyone, I'm currently a student at San Jose State University. I've completed half of my prereq's so far

-prereq GPA: 3.58

-overall GPA: 3.78

-I have not yet taken the TEAS

I've seen a lot of people post about what their GPA was before applying to nursing school and I'm honestly really scared. In most of the posts I've seen, people have stated they attained a 3.9 or a 4.0 GPA. I'm looking to apply to as many csu's as possible (csueb, sfsu, sjsu, etc). I still have a couple more prereq's to take, but as of now, if I were to apply to a csu nursing school, would I have a good chance of getting in w/ my GPA? And if so, which nursing schools do you recommend me applying to. If not, what other actions should I take to become a registered nurse (go overseas, apply to private schools, etc)? Thank you.

You'll need to pull that up, especially the prereq GPA. Have you thought about taking fewer classes at one time to really give yourself the time you need to focus on earning As? It's not a mad dash to nursing school, especially if it means sacrificing your grades.

Outside of raking in as much points as you can with grades, teas and other little things, apply and research schools you would consider attending. Definitely apply to all csus. Consider out of state universities if needed. But avoid diploma mills and going overseas (you shouldn't be that desperate). I personally think that nursing education is not worth the price of private universities but my bloodline isn't made out of money.

I'm from southern California and I started nursing school in 2010. There were waiting lists up the wazoo then too in California. I graduated with my BSN last December from SDSU--South Dakota State University (West River) in Rapid City. There is no waiting list on the west end of the state although the main campus in Brookings gets full. Anyone from California would rather live in RC anyway as the weather, while still South Dakota weather, is not as bad as the eastern half of the state. Lots of people from Washington and California go to SoDak State for nursing. Good luck. I know it's a chore to find the right school.

The only way to find out for certain is to apply to programs and see what happens. But you can talk to the nursing program advisor if you want a prediction. However, I would not bet the month's rent on that. Things happen, things change. There could be some game changing edict that affects the selection process when you apply. Would you want to be out of the running because you were scared off prematurely? Do the best you can in the time you have remaining and then deal with the situation when the time comes. Good luck.

you'll be fineish, get some healthcare experience and you'll definitely be fine

oh and aim for 90%+ on your teas

My first semester of college, I made a huge mistake by taking both Statistics and Chemistry in one semester (I struggle in both). I'm taking Anatomy and English (both prereq's for SJSU) this semester and I'm positive I can get an A in both the courses. If I do manage to get an A in both courses (I'll make sure I will), I'll bump up my Prereq GPA to a 3.73. What GPA do you feel is competitive for most CSU's? Thanks again! :)

It really just depends on the school and the applicant pool that cycle. All you can do is apply. I applied to 10 CSUs my first cycle, and got into 2. Just do the best you can moving forward, and apply, apply, apply.

Wow, congrats on getting admitted to 2 nursing schools! Would you mind telling me your GPA and TEAS score when you applied that year.

The problem with SoCal is that all of the schools have really long waiting lists! Your GPA isn't bad though. If you have some solid rec. letters & a great statement of purpose (and a high teas score) you might get into one of the CSUs.
