Hopeful SSU nursing student for Fall 2014

U.S.A. California

Published

I handed in my application for SSU Nursing the other day... Now I'm dying of anticipation! Any other hopeful nursing students for Fall 2014 out there? What were your grades and scores like? What schools did you apply to?

I also applied to SRJC, COM, and CSUEB

Hopefully we will be classmates! :)

I plan on living in American Canyon with my parents while in nursing school so that means a lot of driving back and forth. I believe it takes about 45 minutes to get to SSU and another 45 minutes to drive back (which I dont have a problem with) but I'm just not sure whether it would be possible, considering the nursing program's busy schedule. Do you guys think this plan would work?

Thank you for your advice NICUmomNICUnurse! I will be selling my nutrition book, and putting it towards nursing school supplies. I got my CPR certification last year through the Red Cross, and it lasts two years now. But I will be renewing it anyway this summer when I get my CNA certification.

Georgettes - Yes, I'm doing it at the Red Cross in SR. Although I can't speak firsthand what commuting during nursing school is like, I can help you weigh some pros and cons. Clinicals for SSU start at 6:30 am, and a lot of them are in Santa Rosa, meaning you'd have to leave your house in American Canyon at least by 5:30am (you would beat commuter traffic though!) However, living with your parents is a huge advantage, assuming you don't have to pay rent (And if you do, you probably aren't charged as much as renting your own place). Keep in mind that if you move closer to the other CSU's you applied to, you will either have to work full-time or take out student loans in order to pay for the added living expenses that come from living away from home. Even though gas is pricey, living at home will save you a lot of money over the next two years. I know that if you drive to SSU or clinicals going through Petaluma, the drive really isn't that bad, especially if your heart is set on SSU. But would you rather wake up earlier and spend ~1.5 hours a day in your car, or move away, spend more money, but have more free time and more sleep?

Hope that helps a little!

I am pretty frugal so I think I would rather drive to school haha!

Also, are we in the same CNA class? I am doing mine in SR also, starting June 16th.

Mine starts June 24th and goes until July 24th, in Santa Rosa. I take it that the one starting June 16th is in San Rafael? I was considering that class, but the one in Santa Rosa is slightly closer to my house. I didn't realize until just now that SR stands for both Santa Rosa AND San Rafael, oops! I should have specified.:)

Oh good point! Well good luck to us! :)

One of my classmates commutes from Fairfield, and another from San Anselmo. The one in Fairfield also works! He's made it this far (graduating May 9), so I think if you want to make it work, you absolutely can. You know how to get up to SSU via 37 and Lakeville Highway? That's the fastest way from American Canyon.

Oh, also, for SOME clinicals, you have input over where you are, and you can choose sites that are closer to home. Community Health has sites all over, including Solano County, Marin, etc. Psych has a site in Marin, and preceptorship is all over. They really do try to advocate for their students and make things as easy as they can by placing you with your home location in mind. Other clinicals, you don't have much choice. Med/surg clinicals are primarily at Kaiser Santa Rosa and Sutter Santa Rosa (though that one may or may not change, as they are changing locations in October), women's health at Santa Rosa Memorial and Sutter SR, etc.

Oh wow I did not know that. Thanks again for the tip! :)

So Friday May 2nd is university orientation! I know that they specified where we have to park but I'm not sure if it's free or if there is a parking fee...

By reading the e-mail it sounds like they'll be handing out parking permits. But if not, the parking machines take cash and visa ($5). See you Friday! ?

@meib92

Did you sign up for classes yet?

Yes I did! Now I'm even more excited/nervous. How about you?
