U.S.A. California

HI,

I am going to have a telephone interview with midway hospital in L.A. Does anybody here know the hospital? could you be kindly give me some information about it? the pay level, the neibourhood around the hospital? the weather? along with the infor about LA? is the cost of living very high?

Thank you in advance:p

Midway is owned by Tenet and is one of the 19 hospitals in California they have put up for sale. Therefore, the hospital's status for the future is unknown. If they are sold salary and benefits would probably change. (I would say No to any hospital owned by Tenet). I believe most new grads are starting around $25-28/hr and you, of course, will command more if you have experience and a BSN or MSN.

If you are interested in the LA area I would suggest UCLA, Cedars, Huntington Memorial (in Pasadena), Little Company of Mary (in Torrance).

Cost of living is high anywhere in CA. Expect to pay at least $1200-$1500/mo for an apartment in a safe good area (no ocean view). Single family homes start around $400K. Car insurance is also high (car and the ability to drive is a requirement anywhere in CA).

Good luck and welcome to CA!

Hi, Gomer

Thank you for your informative reply. As a matter of fact, I am a foreign-educated nurse. The Midway hospital is the hopital in which my recruiter is going to place me. Because I need sponsorship, do you know the hopitals you recommended will sponsor foreign nurse with active RN license? Thank you so much!:)

Sorry, but I don't know of any local hospitals who are sponsoring. I would suggest you ask you recruiter to place you anywhere but a Tenet hospital. I do know that if you are experienced (at least 2 years) and have a college degree many LA hospitals should be interested in you. Have your recruiter check with the hospitals I mentioned before. Again, good luck and welcome!

Gomer,

Could you explain why you would avoid Tenet owned hospitals? Thanks!

Almost any hopsital will sponsor you for a green card. This is quite different than sponsorship with the H1-B visa, which currently are not available for the rest of this year. Have you completed your Visa Screen yet? Without that, you cannot be processed by any embassy. If you have not already signed your contract, I would be very leary in going to this hospital...............

What country are you currently in?

Have you tried any of the VA hospitals? There are several in the southern and northern california area. Since they are federal they often accept foreign licenses. The pay is "iffy" but the benefits are by far some of the best.

I agree regarding Tenet. They have had so many issues over the last few years that that would be the last place on earth that I would want to work -- and it would have to be the last hospital on earth! :rotfl:

Gomer,

Could you explain why you would avoid Tenet owned hospitals? Thanks!

Tenet has 19 hospitals "for sale" in California (see previous post on this site for complete list). Those hospitals will be sold or closed to make up for Tenet's huge financial problems due to bad management. Tenet is known (at least in California) for promoting unnecessary surgeries and treatments for its patients and bad management towards its employees.

Hi, Thanks again for all the information.

I have put aside the Tenet. Another recruiter contacted me and told me her client hospital was willing to sponsor me. The hospital(not owned by Tenet) is in LA area, not downtown. But she was reluctant to tell me more about the hospital due to their company's policy. She said her office was in the hospital and she lived in Long Beach. So I guess the hospital should be near Long Beach. She tried to persuade me to fly to LA( currently I am in New York) to witness the beauty there. She believed that I would absolutely love there. But she won't pay for the airfare, just provide free hotel. According to her,the benefits are competitive plus sign on bonus and relocation assistance. I am still thinking of it. How do you think?

I just took the English test which is required by the Visascreen. I am waiting for the results.

I submitted my application for CA Rn licensure by endorsement last month, but when I called the board, I was told that I need to wait for at least four months due to their overwhelming paperwork. This made me upset....

Best wishes to all

Jessica,

Long Beach is a beautiful area - and you have options of places to live. The cost of living is high any where you try to live out here - but the LA areas are even higher particularly as you get closer to the beaches like Long Beach, Seal Beach [which is just down the street], Newport Beach which is beautiful and with driving distance.

If you could get an inexpensive airfare from southwest or something it might be worth flying out here is you are sure this is where you want to come. That's a big decision. Best of Luck!!! :coollook:
