Gurnick Academy of Medical Arts in Concord

U.S.A. California

I'm just about done with the LVN program at Gurnick there's a few things I would like to share if you are considering attending...

Teachers read straight out of book providing no notes, no study guide or any visual tools

Only one of the clinicals out of four is worth going to the rest were a complete waste of time no hands on experience because the clinical teachers are given little or no instruction by the school on how the clinicals should be ran

You are required to pass the hesi with an 850 before graduating none of the classes are structured around the hesi and none of the test questions are hesi format

They change policies all the time since the school is fairly new and just verbally notify the students

These are just my main concerns I could literally go on and on. :uhoh3:

We learned not to go with the word "only".. Nothing to be fishy about, I just try to get people to learn how to think positive about yourself and the others that's all. Your money cannot buy your ways, otherwise the world will be such so boring. People have their ways to do things. Did you take the Hesi or Nclex yet? Did you fail? I would be pretty upset too if I fail, but not to other people. Just find ways to study and understand the materials; maybe next time you will pass.

Hey NICUrn28! I heard you pass the NCLEX at 85. Congratulations on your future endeavors.

Pnemann- Well said. I concur with everything. The policy kept changing as we went along, so much so that the nursing boards were doing an investation. It went on for months and I even recall another one of my classmates sueing the school.

dkeophil- do you work for gurnick? If so, I feel sorry for you as many administrators/teachers left. (7 to be exact during my 14 months)

If not, Im assuming when you say that you "graduated" on christmas eve, that means that you have passed your classes and prepping for the hesi. If so, maybe you should spend your time wisely and go visit the other forums in regards to hesi study tips instead of going to all the other threads lying about gurnick. There's no need to go back and forth about whether the school is good or not. All this information can be easily assess through the LVN boards.

Study tip #1. Use you own advice: Learn not to go with the word "ONLY". This is an absolute word and it is highly unlikely to be the answer.

Study tip #2. Read the question carefully. Its pretty evident that your grammer is the same as Larissa's.

Good luck on HESI.

Like everyone else, I graduated and its a closed chapter in my life that I will never open!

Good for you!

DK - For your information: I passed my HESI THE FIRST TIME and I PASSED MY NCLEX-PN THE FIRST TIME WITH THE MINIMUM AMOUNT OF ?'S. I studied ON MY OWN through-out the entire program. Gurnick only provided me with clinical sites.

Thank you very much

Have a wonderful day :D

(Thanks Mulan!)

Good for you, I know you are smart and capable to learn!

But, still school must do something right too. My intention was not to attack you guys "whomever" having bad feeling about the institution. I just want to present my perspective. We all have our own opinions, that's make us such unique people. I must focus on myself now. I need to pass all of these crazy tests asap. I need a job.

I have an appointment to go to Gurnick in Concord on Feb 2, 2010. I have heard some good things and some bad things about Gurnick.

I also attended Maric College to be a Medical Assistant 4 years ago. The teachers read from the books also. However, I studied hard and got straight "A"s. I know that this will be much more difficult, but I want this bad enough to make it work if it is possible.

I do hope that Gurnick has had the opportunity to work out it's bugs since it opened. Does anyone know if it is accredited yet? This is very important to me.

I really would like to hear from those of you who have positive things to say, those of you who passed your state tests.

Has anyone gone there and gotten a job? If so, where and about how much are you making? I know these might be personal questions, but I would really like to know what my future will hold after attending this school. Thank you so much for any help.

Cherie

Yes, they are accredited.

It's pretty good school to pursue LVN and bridge to RN. You have strong medical background, I'm confidence that you will be success in your study as well as in your career..good for you!

Please go there to talk with Admission couselor. He's very helpful, he would be happy to answer any of your questions.

Good Luck,

Dont expect to get a job for a loooonnngggg time....

What kind of answer was that? Don't expect to get a job for a long time...Some explanation please. Is the reason I won't get a job for "a long time" because of Gurnick? What kind of nurse are you and what do you do? What college do you go to and how long did it take you to get a job?

I joined this allnurses.com for sound, thorough advise. Please, don't shoot comments at me like that unless you are willing to explain yourself.

Thanks!

Cherie:

We want to support each other and give each other the best of our knowledge.

You will be just fine, you're in the right track, just continue do whatever you're doing.

Good Luck!

The reason you might not get a job for a loonnnggg time is because hardly any new grad LVNs are able to find a job at this time. It has nothing to do with Gurnick or any other school. The market is saturated with new grad LVN's and employers are just not hiring us.

I'm a the kind of nurse that I would want and I work in a surgery clinic. I was one of the few lucky ones to get a fulltime LVN job in the bay area. It took me 3 months to get my job and I was told by the nurse recruiter that they hired me because of my background in healthcare. When I mentioned GURNICK they had never heard of it.

Feel free to ask me any ?'s. I'm a Gurnick grad from san mateo and I have a good friend who went to the Concord campus for LVN.

oh and also cherief

i would suggest that you check out a school called ncp. they are very professional and they give their students a better deal when compared to gurnick. they provide the review class for free (nclex-pn review) and iv certification for free... well, its "included" in your total tuition. also, the teachers there are very knowledgable on the subject matter and you get to do clinicals in kaiser (med-surg!) gurnick will tell you that you will do kaiser clinicals too for ob/gyn and pedi too but that only means 3-4 days in a pediatric clinic and 3-4 days in a ob/gyn clinic in kaiser. what can you learn in 3-4 days?... not much. lucky for me and my partner our preceptor said that we were "mature" so he trusted us enough to move at a fast pace. from what other students told me, they didn't even get to do injections!

the only good thing about gurnick is that they have two teachers, one for med-surg and one for nutrition/a&p, who will teach you a lot but i don't know if they're still there or not...

like i said, feel free to ask me (or mulan. shes a gurnick grad too)
