ER RN pay in San Fran?

U.S.A. California

Published

I'm an ER RN at a magnate hospital in SoCal and am looking to relocate to San Francisco/Oakland early 2016. I'll be entering an online DNP program and need increased funds to pay for it. For any RNs in San Fran/Oakland area (specifically Kaiser if possible) I have a few questions!

1. Are jobs readily available for per diem rns?

2. What is per diem pay in San Fran/your hospital for a 2 year experienced RN II? With/without diff? (Or please post your pay/exp)

3. Is OT readily available

4. Is the ability to pickup extra shifts readily available? (Id ideally like to work 40 hours/week).

Thank you for all your help. I understand difference in cost of living, I just need more solid information on pay to do the calculations.

Look up ucsf's pay scale, it's online for public viewing. Expect -15 to +10 from what ucsf offers, depending on institution. Only a couple places match or pay more than ucsf.

Kaiser per diem rate is in the mid 80s hourly for your experience I'm guessing each facility ranges for the ability to pick up more shifts. It all goes by seniority, so anyone who had been employed there longer than you gets first dibs on picking up shifts. Most per diem at my kaiser work benefitted nurses shifts that they want to give away. If you want to work that many hours you will need to be flexible with working multiple shifts. That may be challenging with school.

Just curious do you know if Kaiser hires new grad BSNs? And what the starting salary might be? I would love to work at Kaiser one day!

Very rarely. They usually will create a few new grad postings but it always goes to internal hires first. Sorry to not give you better news. I have a coworker who lives in the Bay Area, worked as a clerk for kaiser for 10 years and completed her RN. She works in Sacramento and commutes from the bay because it was the only gig she could get in the system as a new grad RN. I'd say you have higher chances getting experience elsewhere and then applying to kaiser.

Thank you! Not bad news, realistic news and I appreciate it! :)
