I'm coming from rancho penasquitos So it's only about a 45-50 minute drive but it gets old real fast. And you can definitely get away with a part time job the first semester. I'm looking into finding one

Hi Lanibear, I've already taken the first 9 units. I'm a CSUSM alumni so I took the first 9 units during my undergrad to save me money for the ABSN program and they are really easy classes. So yes, a part-time job is doable. I took Bio323, Phil345, and Anthro301.. while taking three other classes at CSUSM and another class at a community college, while also having a part time job. I didn't have a social life that semester, but I had to do it because I wanted to graduate a semester early. To say the least, those three classes are super easy.. and the professors were really understanding, nice, and willing to help. I'm sure you'll do great !

They'll also tell you that during your first orientation. Once you get into your second semester, that's when even a part time job isn't doable .

    Hi Lanibear,

What is the conditional acceptance conditional upon? Do you have any classes in progress this semester (fall 12)?

No i dont. I turned in my application when all my prereqs were already finished!

I'm in one of the temecula cohorts and I'll give my 2 cents. I also live in the SD area. You can definitely work 1-2 days a week during 1st semester - classes are a joke. 2nd semester fundamental class/assessment/pharm class are much different that the 1st semester, but people were still able to get As and work part time. 3rd semester medsurg/patho/mental health were a little more difficult, especially if you take them during summer. Most people did not work during that semester.

Also clinical placements are all over the place. We had people in our cohort from SD driving up to Kaiser Riverside 2x week during the summer. We also had people driving down from Riverside to SD. According to the dean, they did not take into account zip codes regarding placement, but she said they were going to look into doing that. Usually we had class from 8-5 (or 7pm) 1 day a week, clinicals 2-3 days a week all day. Some groups will have clinicals on Saturday.

The classes are more time consuming than anything. If you did well in prereqs, then you can do well in these classes. The material is not any harder, it's just way more time consuming. You will be expected to read 10+ chapters a week, do 15 page nursing plans, and group projects, in addition to studying for ATI/NCLEX and quizes and tests almost every week. Of course, a few people manage to get by without doing the assigned readings, but they are few and far between.

So far, everything is definitely doable. The biggest frustration seems to be the lack of organization. The program is still young, and there are a lot of kinks they still have not worked out. I think the biggest thing most of my cohort is looking forward to is being done with the program and getting a job (hopefully). Hey, at least we'll have BSNs which is the gold standard now!
