COC - College of the Canyons - Spring 2014

U.S.A. California

Published

I'm starting this thread for everyone applying for COC's spring 2014 RN program. Please feel free to join in. We're all in this together! For anyone who's thinking of applying, the deadline for turning in your transcripts and requesting your prerequisite evaluation is tomorrow!

I'm an LVN hoping to get into the LVN to RN program. I applied last year and received an email notifying me that I qualified for the program but that they didn't have the required 20 qualified LVN applicants to offer the class. Booo hooo hooo... Oh well, I completed all of the General Ed classes in the meantime and have my fingers crossed for this time around :-)

I'm a little nervous about the TEAS V test and am starting to study for it. I read that the test is pretty challenging. Yikes!

I look forward to hearing from my fellow nail-biters!

Hi 2dawn!

Thank you for creating this thread. I am applying to COC Spring 2014 general nursing cohort. I've taken my TEAS back in February. I am now just waiting for the ok to submit application which should be available tomorrow if I'm not mistaken.

Are you applying to any other program for Spring 2014?

Good luck during the application process. Crossing my fingers for all the future aspiring nurses out there!

Welcome Goldenheart!

When did you submit your prerequisite evaluation request? Last year I submitted my request on July 31st and still hadn't received a reply on August 27th so I submitted my application on the 28th as per the instructions.

So far, I haven't applied to any other program. There are only two other programs within a somewhat reasonable driving distance. Moorpark College requires Anatomy, Physiology, and Microbiology to have been completed within seven years of application date. I took Anat/Phys II within the last seven years but I took Anat/Phys I and Micro more than seven years ago. Arrrgh... You can petition them to accept older classes but I don't know how likely they are to accept them. Also, the drive to Moorpark is a long torturous two lane road with more twists and turns than an amusement park ride. Ventura College is the only other alternative and they're not NLN accredited, so it's not an option. Most job postings I've seen require that you graduated from an accredited college. What colleges are you applying to?

What are your thoughts on the TEAS V? Was it pretty rough?

Not applying for COC, but thought I would chime in on the TEAS V. I just took it for the second time for my application to National University. It is not an easy test, but if you study, you can do well.

There are many threads on AllNurses that have very good information - what to study, suggested resources, etc.

I got an 83.4 the first time I took it. I had the opportunity to take it again to increase my score when I applied to National. I took the opportunity and scored an 88% the second go around. I took my original score and feedback and brushed up on all areas but really focused on the areas that I scored the lowest in.

Way to go BeesMama! I'd be doing a happy dance if I got 83.4%! I'm worried about getting the 62% required at COC!

I've read a few of the threads on AllNurses but I should read more. I have the ATI Study Manual and have been using the index to choose which videos to watch on brightstorm.com. I read a worrisome post that said that the Study Manual doesn't cover each area in the same depth as is on the test. What did you use to study?

Wishing you all the best at National University!

Thanks! What did I use -- well, do as I say not as a I do -- my first time, I didn't study. I wasn't sure what to expect and I was not very well prepared. That being said, I did well in math and science in high school and college, so that was my saving grace!

The second time around, I studied all of my weak areas. If you have the ATI study manual, I would recommend taking a practice test and seeing what you are weak in.

Also, I highly recommend KahnAcademy(dot)com (I think TOS is no websites). It is free online lectures. The professor that put the website together is very easy to understand and explains things incredibly well.

Definitely search "TEAS" test on ATI. People have broken things down quite well and I used that as well. Some things to definitely brush up on is punctuation and grammar! That was one of the harder parts for me. Knowing the parts of a sentence is important.

I'm afraid to take a practice and find out the areas that I'm weak in, i.e. EVERYTHING!

When you mentioned punctuation and grammar I got weak in the knees and then when you mentioned parts of a sentence I saw my life flash before my eyes! Oh nooooo...

I watched one of the videos on KhanAcademy and loved it! Thanks for recommendation! When I searched ATItesting I didn't find any discussion board. What am I doing wrong?

Thank you!

I submitted my prerequisite evaluation about 3 weeks ago. I hope that we'll be hearing from them soon. The anticipation can be a killer! I have applied to LA County so far. I'm looking into a few other programs to increase the odds of being accepted.

I have read through several posts on here about the colleges being accredited. What accreditation are you searching for? All schools here are http://www.rn.ca.gov/schools/rnprograms.shtml It also shows that Venture is an accredited program as well.

The TEAS test can be a little challenging especially in the science area (my last science was roughly 4 years ago). I purchased the ATI study guide. I do agree with a lot of people out there that it hardly scratches the surface of what the exam actually covers. My suggestions would be to use up any study materials you can out there and brush up on science, primarily physiology & biology. Any idea when you plan on taking it?

I would search for TEAS, Studying for TEAS, TEAS prep -- something along those lines.

Good luck!

I'm sooo sorry that I didn't answer your posts in a timely fashion. I have spent the entire day dealing with massive problems submitting my application. I hope that my experience will help others. I promise to post tomorrow after a little dinner and rest. My best wishes to all.

Isn't it a pain having to log into the COC email every day to see if they gave you the green light to submit your application? I wish they would let you use your private email account! I never received a response to my prerequisite evaluation. After close to two months of checking my COC email, I received my first response from them on September 20th; the fatal email that I qualified for the program but they didn't have enough qualified LVN's to offer the class. Ugh...

It's my understanding that a BRN "approved" program isn't the same as an "accredited" program. On the Ventura College website it says they have been a candidate for National League for Nursing (NLN) accreditation since May 2011, i.e. they aren't currently accredited. I called the BRN yesterday morning to find out if my interpretation of "approved" vs. "accredited" is correct and they directed my call to an extension where I left a message. They still haven't called me back. Maybe they'll call today.

COC will let us know when we will take the TEAS test. It should be around the end of September. I feel like my neck is in the guillotine and I'm just waiting for the blade to drop :-O

Submitting my application was a real challenge. They require all attachments to be in PDF format and my scans were in TIFF format. After a Google search, I downloaded a TIFF to PDF converter from CNET that has a free 15 day trial. It worked! Then I tried repeatedly to access the link to the online application using Mozilla Firefox without any luck. The COC website was having problems so I'm not sure if the problem was Firefox or the website but I opened my ancient Internet Explorer browser and was finally able to access the application. Success!

I'll give that a try. Thanks for the hot tips!
