cna student possible dilemma

A patient in a long term facility where I am doing clinicals was very upset and demanded that I help him call his dr to make an appointment and get shuttle service info for him to get to the appointment. The cna that I was shadowing said that by helping him, I went outside my scope of practice. Only the charge nurse can contact drs offices for patients. My teacher was very upset with me and sent me home. I may get kicked out of the program for this. But is this fair or even possible? I realize now that as a future cna, my scope of practice will mostly be limited to ADLs, and to not get intimidated by patients.
