CA RN NCLEX result?

Hello everyone, my name is Jack and I'm from California. I just graduated from an ASN nursing program and took the NCLEX-RN on the 10th. I only had 75 questions and have been checking the BRN website every single day. I felt confident walking out of the exam but am now experiencing a lot of self-doubt and "what if's", due to not seeing my name on the website. Can anyone who has recently taken the NCLEX-RN tell me what the average time is to post a new license on the BRN website? I'm driving myself insane, checking it 50 times a day. It is simply difficult not knowing one's fate.

From what I've read so far in this forum, it seems like a few of you are in the same boat, waiting to hear results. I did not know you can call the board and get results over the phone. I do not think that is possible in California. I did try calling to see but the recording just says "due to high volume of calls, your call cannot be answered at this time, please try agian later". Great! Can anyone give me feedback or advice on post-NCLEX issues, with the exam stopping at 75 questions and no word via internet or regular mail in about 9 days so far? Thanks!

I know that most of my friends who've passed have seen their name on the BRN website in 3-4 days and it's been close to 10 for me. Can anyone give a detailed explanation of why it would take such a long time to post one's name on the website? (unless, of course, I failed at 75, despite the amount of studying I did)

Are you definitely sure that your file is 100% complete with the BRN? If one thing is missing, such as even a photo, they will not send you your license. There could have been an issue that your LiveScan results never got there. Or for some reason that your transcripts never arrived. CA is one of the only states that will permit a new grad to take the exam, before they have received final transcripts from your school.

I usually tell nurses to wait 10 days, and if they have not heard, to actually phone them to verify that their file is actually complete. They will not notify you if it is not. Best time to call is 9am, right when they open.

Thanks for the replies on all my postings. Sorry about the multiple posts but I thought maybe I had posted in the wrong places. Kinda new here but I will definitely look into what you said. I will call ASAP near 9AM to the BRN and figure out if my file is complete or not. Will they then tell me the steps I would need to take in the event of some file deficiency? I would presume so. Thank you again for your thorough reply and suggestions. It is very much appreciated!

Hi there..

Well from my experience, your # of questions answered in the exam is neither a pass or a fail result. You do not need to call the BON and ask for your result. This further delays their work in processing results...They cannot help you either. If your result has not been received for a month, definitely check back with them. Release of the test results do vary , sometimes you can get the result within a week , two weeks etc. I think its because some things are manually done. (As you can see we are still not on the quick results program)

Going online and checking to see if the board had issued you a license is a wonderful tool, however not as reliable as the "snail mail" from the BON. I know what you are feeling and its treacherous! Be patient...At least you know that you have done your best in your exam and you should be proud of yourself.

thank you for you encouragement. Yes, the nauseous, uneasy feeling that I probably did not pass is overwhelmingly strong. The strange thing is that I felt that I actually knew the material this time around and went through 2 different Q & A books which totaled to about 3500 questions, studying all rationales and getting 75-80% accuracy etc etc. I came out of the exam, feeling pretty good since I felt answered a lot of them right. I ended at 75 which I thought was a good indication, compared to my first try which was almost 200!! Could it be that I'm that far off from my perceptions of the exam vs reality? Even if I got a lot wrong, the computer would have let me answer more questions, not simply shut down right? Thats the one things that is nagging me: finishing at 75 with a relatively good feeling abou the exam, yet no word. I started getting restless after a week had passed without evidence of licensure.

In any case, my name not up on the BRN website within a week pretty much means failure in my book. It's just a matter of waiting for the official letter.

I feel your pain... Really I do... I know how hard it is to study and getting the results is much more painful and will drive you insane. Don't be too hard on yourself ... Sometimes you would have to let go all of your doubts and worries...focus on one thing... YOU ACTUALLY TRIED and feel no regrets. Taking the exam is not that easy. I know you put in a lot of hours studying relentlessly but that is how we prepare for the exam.
The 75 questions is the minimum number of questions that a candidate can take. Either you are doing bad or doing good on your answers, it just a matter of the computer knowing if you have reached the minimum % of competency. Picture it as a basketball in a freethrow line and you have 5 minutes to throw as many as you can until the time ends.On top of this, each player would need to shoot it from different distances (3 point line..etc) If a player keeps on shooting and the ball goes in the basket, then there is a strong chance of winning... While another opponent keeps on missing the basket, would surely loose. This is how RN exam works. The computer will give you easy and difficult questions, depending on how you answer them. If you keep on answering each item incorrectly, the computer will give you a chance to go back to the passing line again...(so sometimes the questions becomes easier ) then it shoots a difficult question and see if you can go up or below the line......If by 75 the computer still can't determine your competency... Then it would continue answering questions...
Continue living your life and stop tormenting yourself. I know this is hard to do but maybe start by going out... talking to friends and even treat yourself in a nice dinner or something....Look, there is no shame in trying. Heck I have to do my RN Exam again..

Thank you. I'm sorry to rant and ramble about issues that most have gone through and most have only experienced for 3-4 days (as that is the usual time of BRN web posting in California). You're absolutely right. This ineffective coping must stop here and now. It's like anticipatory grieving if I can even call it that. The idea of failing at 75 tells me I must really have missed the mark and be a complete idiot when it comes to nursing!! That's what puts me in denial. If I finished at 100+ or even 265 I would be more accepting of an impending failure, but at 75? Just a bit hard to swallow.

To complete your analogy of basketball which I thought was a good one, finishing at 75 mean one of two things: SWISH or AIRBALL. I would've figured that I would at least bounced it off the rim or backboard right? When all is said and done, the white envelope has not arrived and I'm only driving myself into a psychosis by not seeing my name on the BRN website and thinking that I must be the lousiest free-throw shooter in history!! LOL. Before I put myself through a severe anxiety panic attack and hypertensive crisis, I will do what I know theoretically to be "good interventions": socialize, resume hobbies (did I even have any before nursing school?: P), and relax. There's nothing I can do about it now. Thanks again for hearing me out.

Dear all,

I gave my exam on Jan 13, 2005 and have a SSN number. Today is 26th, still haven't received the results. Not on the website either. May be I failed ! My questions shut off at 75.

Hi Nefer,

Gosh... I understand how you are feeling... And just like what I have told the others... patience is really a virtue... The BON has their own procedures and we would have to be patient in getting our results... The 75 questions is either a pass or a fail result... Its just a matter of the computer reaching a decision of how much comprehension of nursing care that a candidate has... If you have failed, just accept it and do better... It's not a measure of someone's being... nor the amount of intelligence a person has..... You should be proud because you have finished the courses needed to be taking the exam...

Please never look down yourself because you know yourself more than anyone else... You are not alone... A lot of people experienced your pain and look at them now...they are all successful RNs now... Someday we will all be...

Anyway, don't lose hope... Keep on praying.... Keep on studying...

hi suzzane... good day... i would just like to inquire whether there is a possibility that a foreign graduate with valid SSN have his/her name published in the CA BON website even though I don't have a visa and is presently residing outside US? got my SSN 3 yrs ago...
