Ventura does not have a waiting list and it is a good school with a high pass rate on the NCLEX. Call the counseling office and ask to be signed up for one of the nursing intro workshops ASAP. They offer one weekly, usually thursdays at 10:00am. Only catch is all pre reqs must be done, not in progress and you must be a certified CNA. They extended their app deadline.

wow thankyou very much i called them and they said that they do have a waiting list. its about a year=/ i can challenge the CNA boards because i took the cna but like 5 years ago.. i also told them im a paramedic so hopefully they will make an exception. As far as the pre reqs that need to be met what exactly do you mean by that. like i have to finish Anatomy Physiology English and Micro? Thankyou again in advance ill be signing up for the workshops ASAP! i should be done by summertime. hey also do you know what speech class you need is it Process of communication or Mass public speaking?

How strange! We were told last week by a nursing counselor that they technically do not have a waiting list right now. I am curious what they say when you go to your workshop? And I hope you can challenge the CNA, that would be a bummer to take over again.

Yes, you have to finish the CORE prereqs. Those are (per the info sheet we got at the workshop)

Intermediate algebra or Applied Math for Health Care Professionals

Chemistry for Health Sciences or Elementary Chem OR 1 year high school Chem,

General Human Anatomy

Intro to Human Physiology

General Microbiology

CNA or equivalent and either

Human Development (not child development) OR Introduction to Developmental Psychology.

The only class they offer out of the above online (in case you want to take it distance) is Developmental Psych, Inter Algebra and possibly Human Development.

All other courses required for an AS to be achieved when you are done (which you will need to have done before you can test for your NCLEX) must be completed before you finish the program. You do not have any nursing classes during the summer so you could try to cram them all in then but that would be hard, as much as you can finish before would of course make life easier.

As for the speech classes it can be either Intro to Speech Comm or Critical Thinking in Oral Comm: Argument and Debate. Their only other requirement's, which are also required to achieve an AS and can be done at anytime during the program, are English Comp, Intro to Psych and a choice between Cultural Anthro, Into to Soc, Social Problems or Racial and Ethnic Group Relations.

It is up to you to choose and fulfill 1 course from (when looking at an AA/AS check sheet) American History and Institutions, 1 from Fine or Performing Arts, 1 form Humanities, 1 Health Education and 1 Physical Education.

I hope that helps and good luck! If anything I'm glad I could help you check out another option.

Yes thankyou, I will call them again and see whats going on because now i find that odd as well. so i really have most of the pre reqs done. at AVC i have taken Micro English chem and Speech. (process of communicaation) so i guess all of those classes will easily transfer and i should be fine. Im taking Anatomy right now and will take Phys in the summer. the only other classes ill need is Psychology Math and Sociology. i will definately apply in the summer since that is the case and will also try and call the school again tommorow. AVC is a 3 semester wait and even though i would be proud to graduate as a marauder a year i wouldnt mind jumping to another program sooner

Those are the requirements, but I think you're going have to take Speech 101. My friend applied to Vetura last semester and she in now (Spring).

I wish I could go there, but I live and work in Palmdale. The hospital where I work is extremely busy so cutting my hours when they need me the most doesn't feel good :-(.

I'll just try AVC, but getting to see a counselor for the edu plan will be my biggest challenge.

Thirdwatch and ICUterrry,

I know AVC tells you it's a 3 semester wait, but it's more like 2 semesters, and if you are lucky even 1. I put in my application June 2010, and few weeks back was offered a spot (which I couldn't accept) for Spring 2011. The waitlist is long, but some of the applicants either don't pass the TEAS or get accepted to other programs or what not, and thus the waitlist drops. So, I would recommend you still put in your app. To get an appointment with the counselor, please do so before the pre-registration period begins b/c you'll end up having to physically be present around 7am waiting in line to get an appointment. Forget about calling in trying to make an appointment during that time because they take the students who are physically in line as priority, so by the time they do actually answer your call, all the appointments have been given away for that day (and I don't mean same day appointments).

Good luck :-)

I tried to get a same day appointment for about a week, I think I needed to be there at 6am. I was there at 7am...and all appts were taken.

It's been really cold this week, so next for sure. I work at Palmdale Regional...and the RN instructors seem nice.

OMG really? maybe bc school just started last week they are still cramped with student's needing to see the counselor. Maybe next week it will be better for you, god willing.

That's awesome that you work at Palmdale Regional, I so wish to work there once I graduate. That all depends on the job openings available though, my desire is to do OB/GYN (or postpartum) or NICU. What position do you hold right now at Palmdale Regional if you don't mind me asking.

I'm off on Tuesday, so I'll be camping outside the admin building. Palmdale Regional is so busy, I regret leaving my CNA job at the state prison. They're planning on expanding. By the time you graduate, there will be a maternity unit. Try to get a CNA, or phlebotomy cert to get your foot in.

Ohh I thought they were operating the maternity floor already. Ya, the thing about the prison is that they wont take new graduates. I actually worked as a CNA before, but that was like 5 years ago, and I really am not planning on working while doing nursing school, too much.

Anyhow, so you liked working at the prison?
