Welcome nursingwithadhd!

Im going to jump right into it. Are you currently able to hold a full time job? If so, its very likley you will not have a problem. Remember, the last time you have attended school was when you were a teenager in high school. You are 27 now, and have a better hold of your ADHD plus you have it under control with your medications. Anyway, I recommend you re-post your question in the nursing with disabilities forum. There you will find people that will be more of help, since they may have gone through the same problem.

Good luck!

Oh I suggest you eventually arrange to shadow a CRNA (if that is the only reason you are getting into nursing) before you embark in the long journey, just to give you a better idea of the nature of the job. If you have trouble focusing or staying still that may not be the best choice of work (IMO). Again browse the pre-CRNA, SRNA, and CRNA forums and talk to those guys there. Again welcome home and good luck!!

Hi there, welcome to us both! since I'm new to the forums as well. You are not alone. I'm one semester away from graduating with my IGETC degree and I plan on transferring to a four year for my BSN. School is hard but there are so many resources on campus. Tutors, study groups and your wife could help you not to mention the counselors. I must say that going into fall semester I'm pretty nervous as well because I have to take my math and science classes. I'm 30 years old and I know how it feels to be the old guy on campus. When I went back to school 2 years ago I tested into basic math but my english was spot on. I felt like a dunce-cap but I knew that it was only temporary. I'm sure you will do just fine. Just remember that the school and teachers are there to help you and never feel ashamed or scared t ask for help. Next semester I have to take chemistry, anatomy and intermediate algebra and don't think I'm not going to live inside of the math/science resource center haha. Just remember to take things slow. For my first semester I took just 6 units to ease back into school life to test the waters out. You are still young so there is no need to rush things it will only lead to discouragement and we don't want that. Good luck with all of your life dreams, it is a long road but with the right support you will make it.

Cheers

It's really great that you have goals and want to go further in life! I have to tell you, that by clinical standards I have ADHD. Because of my personal beliefs, I refuse to take medication.

In any case, I know it sounds scary but you *CAN* do this. When it comes down to it, your needs for yourself and your family will give your condition the finger and you'll do what you need to do to finish school.

I told myself years ago, that nothing can stop me. Screw anybody else's diagnosis, medication only deals with the symptoms of my problems and not the real condition, and that my body does not control me, *I* control *it* I will not be a slave to my weaknesses.

That's what I had to do, and I admit it requires a lot of discipline. There are times when I get really, really angry w/myself because I still do things like...

drop something I'm holding not even realizing I've done it and have no clue where to look for it, or I'll forget that I need to focus on someone who's talking to me and have absolutely no idea what they've just said. But I don't give up, because I WANT to function positively and I will, and that's the end of it.

If you need anything at all, please pm me. I start school at the end of August and I know what's it like to struggle with little things that most people do effortlessly.

you'll do JUST FINE!!!!

The best advice I can give you is to not become your diagnosis. Don't let it put you in a box, don't let it define you, don't TELL people 'hey I have ADHD FYI' randomly. That's not who you are. You're bigger than it is, and I'm telling you..I have SERIOUS problems with focusing, remembering, organization, and lack of ability to finish ANYTHING I start. But I decided that that's not me, and though I'll always struggle, I don't have to be defined by those 4 words. And neither do you!

:D

you can dooo itttttt!

:anpom:

Congratulations on your decision! If nursing/CRNA is truly the field you desire to enter, then you will find a way to make it work. I am 40 years old, diagnosed with ADD 4 years ago, taking Ritalin, and I just graduated Cum Laude early this month - it CAN be done! I, too, am planning to pursue my dream of becoming a CRNA; in fact, I'm going straight back to school at the end of this month to work on my BSN toward that end. If you want it badly enough, you will succeed, no matter the obstacles!:wink2:

It can be done! I have OCD (controlled) and undiagnosed ADD (there is no hyperactivity to it)
