Are You Having Layoffs?

My employer, a kids hospital in L.A. area, has started using the L-word in meetings. And at a time when other hospitals in town are thriving. They are having constant meetings to "reassure" us they will try to protect us, but really it feels like they are just warming us up for getting chopped?

Is this happening by you?

I work in a small rural facility and we recently had all our nurse techs, secretaries and 6 LVNs laid off. We are staffing one RN in the ICU per shift and one ED nurse leaves at 0400. I am not so sure I care to hang my license out in this ICU, but there are hiring freezes most other places in my area. I have been a nurse 28 years and NEVER seen nurses laid off. We were not told about any of this until the day the techs were taken one by one to HR and given a severence pkg and told they were being laid off, due to financial reasons. The nurses were treated in the same manor the next day.
