time/suggestions for CA licensure

Hi all,
After reading allnurses at work for so long I finally decided to join! At any rate, I'm relocating to CA and am wondering how long it takes to get my license verifited in CA. I heard it takes longer than average, and as I am trying to coordinate it with my last day of work up here (so I'm still licensed in my current state), I don't want to get licensed too soon. My state is not part of nursys, and I hear getting one's fingerprints done is a lot of the hassle. How long was it for everyone else who relocated before they got their license? Anyone have suggestions for expediting the process?

Thanks!!

Hello and Welcome to Allnurses.com

Great to have you. Check out all the forums while you are here. You will love the site.

As far as I know, you do not need to wait until the move to apply and receive your Ca license. You can have dual licensure.......

thoughtful_one,

I just moved to California two weeks ago from Kansas. Like you, my home state was not part of the NurSys. I printed out the PDF forms for CA licensure. One of those forms included a verification form you can send to your state you are licensed in. For my state, I sent this and paid a $25 fee. I did this about 10 days prior to leaving. Really that's all you need to do in advance before going to Sacramento. Once you're in Sacramento, you bring in your application (printed off from their website), pay $80 for it and get your fingerprint card done their, too. It costs $66. Be prepared to wait several hours, though, before they issue you a temporary license. It took me about 5 hours to get the fingerprints and an hour for the temporary license. All-in-all it's a pretty good system. I hope this helps!

If the BON has received verification from your state, then you can do the live scan for the fingerprints, and have a temporary license in hand in about 5 hours, if you take the trip to Sacramento. Well worth it in my opinion.
( My fingerprints took less than 35 minutes to get, but I needed to go to Kinko's for the nursys application, etc. Was on the road back home by about 1 pm. Just try to be at the BON office when they open in the morning. The DOJ (Dept of Justice) for the Live Scan is just a short drive from there.
