South Cali RN waiting lists

Ok, so are they really two years?? I am moving there in a few weeks, to southern California, and keep seeing two year waiting list. What do they decide on? If you have a good GPA is your wait less, or do they do lotteries in Cali? I know of one college that does lotteries, is that all over there? I have a lot of the prereq's out of the way. Im debating on moving to Missouri for a year just to get my RN. I dont want to leave my hubby behind, but I dont know what else to do. Anyones opinions would be appreciated. Ow and I am an LVN right now. Not that that helps. LOL.

Where in southern california do you live? Actually, most of the schools have waiting lists longer than 2 years, and a lot of them require a 4.0 to get in, and a few students get in by lottery. Some are all lottery.
Your best bets if you live in the inland empire (where I live).
are:
College of the Desert (most people i've met have gotten in on the first try, even just straight RN) but it is because nobody lives there!
San Bernardino Valley College -it's not in a nice area, but I've heard it's not as difficult to go there.
Mt San Jacinto College- they actually reserve spots just for LVN to RN transition students. I believe there is somewhere between 12 and 24 spots a year.
I hope I answered your questions! Good luck!

Hey NickiLaughs,
Thanks for your response. I have been so bumbed with this move. I am having problems finding the job I want in the area and a school. It is so frustrating. I will be close to Victorville. There is a community college there, and that is the one that currently does it by lottery. They say they are thinking of changing this though. SB isnt to far either so that is an option. I am stressing myself out with all this. I finally got my Cali license so that makes me happy. Now I just have to find a good job and school. I have always done Med/Surg, and none of the hospitals locally hire many. So my option is commuting to SB or going LTC. I have also looked into some agency, like interim. I dont know much about them, but have been kind of offered a job through them doing home health with Peds. I just dont know what to do since I LOVE MED/SURG. I dont want to commute an hour or so and get paid four dollars an hour less. Decisions decisions. Thank you again though for your advice. I will keep SB in mind when I get there. We only have a few more weeks and we will be there.
Take care,
Holly

San Bernardino Community Hospital hires LVNs, So does Loma Linda University, and Veterans' hospital in Loma Linda. I believe the VA pays the most. I don't know how competitive Victorville is. It might not be as bad as you think. It's fairly remote out that way still.
I was trying to work in a hospital, but most of the hospitals pay very little around here. I'd take about a 5$/hr paycut. I work in a assisted living.

When I spoke to the lady at the college in Victorville, she said two year wait with lottery. She said they may be changing that and I hope they do. I have a high GPA and think I would have a better chance. I am going to end up I think in LTC. Im not going to drive an hour and a half for five dollars less an hour. That is crazy. But I have no idea what to expect for pay there, so it might sound better to me, then I find out its not. Im use to lower wages with lower cost of living. I have heard different stories on rate of pay so I dont know what to expect. I guess ill interview and see what the best is. At this point, any job, whether it be LTC or M/S, and ill be happy. I have never done LTC so I dont know what to expect with that either. They may not even want me with no experience there. Thanks for all the great info!!!

San Bernardino Comm hospital does hire LVNs but only for their NeuroCare units which is like a LTC but with alot of patients that are in chronic, vegetative states. Victor Valley College does have a nice program and I am from their original graduating class of 1977 but have had no contact with them in many years. We get some students from the program and they seem to like it well. Good luck

San Diego has a years long waiting list for RN at every college as well, however, the step up programs don't have a waiting list anywhere near that long. Students who want to are usually able to get into step up programs right after LVN graduation if they have the prereqs., several people graduating next month are planning on stepping up this summer. Plus, jobs for LVNS are plentiful here, I don't graduate until next year and I've been to a few interviews already.
