SAN DIEGO & the Public school system

Hi,
I currently live in IL & my husband & I are tossing around ideas of a few different cities to live in. I would love to move back to San Diego but I heard that the public school system in California is awful. Although, we don't have kids yet we want to move somewhere where we know our (eventual) kids will get a good education. If anyone could, would you tell me specifically about SD & close town or suburbs nearby that have good public school systems? THANKS!!!!

The school district in Poway generally has good schools. La Jolla, Del Mar, Carlsbad, etc. are supposed to be good too. You should check on www.greatschools.net for test scores. You can put in a city or the zip code.
