Some are good. Some are bad. No, they are not all unionized. Do you have questions about a specific facility?

Thanks RNmommy, no none specific, I am trying to decide which part of Calif. I want to move to. So I am checking that out here, trying to get some inside advice. I was interested in San Francisco, or at least looking in the area, and different towns, or the better climate area of San Diego. Just hoping someone can give me some insight? Thank you for replying, any info would help.....

You will find that most of the hospitals in the San Diego area are well run. The major players are Scripps, Sharp, UCSD adn Kaiser. Both UCSD and Sharp are unionized and some of Scripps facilities are unionized. I work at an ununionized Scripps campus so I don't have any experience with the CNA. I also know very little about Kaiser except that the patients seem to either love it or hate it. I work in maternity, so most of the feedback I hear about Kaiser is nagative. The benefits are rumored to be the best at UCSD with Kaiser a close second. There is only one Magnet hospital in San Diego: Scripps La Jolla. Pay is good in San Diego but not nearly as high as San Fran. However, the COL is greater in the Bay Area.

I do have some input on Sharp Grossmont in SD. I worked there on the Med/ Surg unit as a CNA and it was GREAT! My supervisor was great, she let us have input on our schedules, I was hired PD and after 2 weeks I was offered a full time position. Everything about Sharps was great, the orientation was great, once on the floor they orientated me as long as I was comfortable. All of the other employees were great and so willing to teach me everything I needed to know. I would refer anyone there, my experience was awesome. Unfortunately, I relocated out of the area and had to quit...

I went to nursing school in San Diego. I wanted to work there. But when I compared pay vs cost of living in San Diego to Sacramento, you better believe I left San Diego. I looked at Sharp, Scripps, Childrens, Paradise Valley, UCSD, Kaiser, etc. The pay in San Diego is insulting. I laughed when the hiring manager at Sharp told me what they would pay. I doubled that pay in Sacramento.

Although I'm not a nurse yet, I have heard that SD is one of the lowest paid cities for nurses in CA. That is shocking since the cost of living is thru the roof! My mother-in-law who has been an OR nurse for 30+ years told me its due to the unions not demanding more pay. I guess they figure everyone is happy to live in SD so they will accept whatever pay is given.
I was born and raised in SD however I'm ready to leave due to this and waiting lists for NS. Not to mention we will only be able to afford a condo when I'm done.
I love SD but hospitals here need to pay more!

Hi Im jackie an English nurse hopeing to relocate to california some day. I have been looking at house prices and could not help noticing the exspence. anyway for me thats still a long way off. I am also intrested in the hospitials in the south california area what are the best ones to work in. We are in Carlsbad for a month in july (my family and I) and would love to visit some hospitials whilst we are there, just to get a real feel of what it could be like to work in America. I would also love to meet up with some American nurses as well. looking forward

Jackie
