Physicaly challenged/still want to be an RN

by Cindee

Hi all,

I am a Medical Asst now. I really want to persue nursing as my career. But I have a serious back condition which is requiring surgical repair the end of this month. So, my question is, will I be able to preform as an RN, hopefully working in Med/Surg. I will have some limitations. But those are still undetermined. I dont want this disability to hinder my desire to become a great nurse.
What do you all think?

Many nurses get back injuries while working med-surg. I did. I 'm sorry to say this, but going into nursing with a back injury will be very difficult. Most of us go into to nursing with good backs, and ruin them after we are there.

Hey wait a minute...... don't get discouraged! There are jobs for nurses that do not require anything but the ability to talk on the phone and ability to use a computer! I am a telephone triage nurse and sit all day talking to pts. We have a nurse who because of a bad hip can't sit for very long so she has an adaptive equipment. We also had someone with M.S. when I was still working in Calif.(transferred to Atlanta).

aww Thanks Shercat. I do want to have patients, not just push papers all day. So that is very encouraging to know there is still a chance for me. I just have to have to enroll, and take the "jeers" from classmates. I will be 39 this May. I will be the old broad for sure! So be it! Im a late bloomer!!!
