National University v.s Grossmont College in san diego

by Ra1983

Hi everyone!

I am still taking pre reqs at City in S.Diego, and should finish by fall 2007. but I am having a hard time deciding where to go for nursing. I talked to a counselor in the nursing dept. at grossmont and told me it would be a 1 1/2-2 yrs. waiting for a ADN 2yr program. I hear the program is great and that Hospitals love these nurses from grossmont.

I also got info for the program in National University and told me that there was no waiting list, but if you wanted to join the 22 month, BSN program, its about 30-35k(estimate) and a 2.75 GPA or higher. also an essay of your professional goals and why you want to be a nurse! Now that sounds really good to me!!! What do you guys think? They told me they were accredited, and if I ever wanted my MSN, any University here in S.D would take the credits earned there.
I was just curious to know if anyone knows about these programs. I am leaning more against National University.

But is it true that hospitals prefer to hire someone with more education from a 4yr university than at an accelerated program??
I need feedback. Please I need to know.

I would never ever pay that much for a degree from National Univeristy. I'm getting my ADN from Grossmont, then most likely doing the RN to BSN step up at San Diego State. You often can get much of that paid for by the hospital.

Ive also seen the clinical time that National gets and it's nothing compared to Grossmont, ive also been on the floor with National University students who were "ahead" of me and it was sort of a joke.

I'm not biased.

Well I had thought of doing that as well. Just the fact that I would still have to wait 2 more years before starting, discourages me some, and I am not on the waiting list yet! Well I just dont know if going to National University is worth it or not since it is an accelerated program, but I like the fact that you can go further and have more options in your career with your BSN then ADN. I know I could always step it up at SDSU if I wanted to go from ADN to BSN but I think experience counts alot more. I've read so many topics about it and they usually have same entry level skills, from what I've heard. Correct me if I am wrong.

Well I really liked the info. you gave me, thanxx alot! Just have a question for you. What kind of clinical time do you get at grossmont compared to national? Does it have more hands on? Just curious.
Thank you for your feedback!

I applied to National University in Sept and I'm still waiting to hear back. I heard that only about 50% of applicants get in and you cannot reapply for one year.

From what ive seen, Grossmont gets better clinical time. One time I was on a med/surge floor talking with a National University student and they hadn't done half the things ive done. To be honest, I don't even know what he was doing on the floor. I know he helped my patient down to her car when she was discharged.

I'm in San Diego but went to Palomar College which has a tremendous long waiting list but is a fantastic program.

The National program seems good, they do clinicals at our hospital. It is very expensive though, just like all National programs.

Grossmont is an excellent program too but we have a CNA at work who is attending their LVN program and she told me the other night that Grossmont lost their accreditation (and/or funding?) for next year's RN program so better check on it.

I am a graduate from grossmont college son june '03 They have an excellent core curriculum and has standed the test of time. Grossmont has a reputation of generating EXCELLENT ADN nurses with a strong emphasis on clinical skills. National Univ is a new program with an incredibly high tuition price. The y have practically no track record to speak of. If you want a quality education, with an emphasis on preparation fro the nclex, take my advice. Go to Grossmont!!! You won't regret it I promise!

Grossmont is NOT losing their accreditation. They are dropping the optional NLN accreditation. That is something completely different than the real accreditation, the board of registered nurses. From my understanding, many schools are choosing to do this.

Speaking of accreditation...
If I get my BSN from National will I be able to get my MSN from Cal State schools or other Universities?

Is there accreditation accepted?

From what I've read, National University is accredited by WASC- the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. That is what accredits the colleges so yes it would be accepted. But don't take my word for it. Just check on the National University website. It will tell you. Also a counselor there will tell you.
