MLK is also known as "Killer King". It has many problems and JCAHO has recommended closing many departments. Their trauma center is about to be axed. Most of the problems have been blamed on nursing, but IMHO it's the administration that should be replaced as it is very political. I suggest you go to www.latimes.com and run a search on MLK for the complete story (you have to register to access the search, but you can make up a name and e-mail). Also, if you can get out of the contract, you should think about it. Not a safe place to work or be a patient at.

Does not have a good reputation at all. I can't imagine applying to work there anytime soon. Word of mouth is that it's a death trap. Are you going on a travel assignment?

Don't go! It is not safe.

Just curious -- how did you end up with an assignment there? Where are you now? Are you a traveler and have no information on the facility?

If an agency is sending you there, fire your agency.

MLK has a rep for sure. Their trauma dept handles lots of gunshots and stabbing wounds. Very very rough.

I did my clinicals there, I learned a lot there since they see many trauma pts. There are very good nurses there as well, but sadly the good nurses always take the rap for the bad nurses who are there and the administration. It does have a bad reputation and the trauma dept might be closing in about 90 days. All I can say is if you do go, look out for your self, do your job right because the state has their eye on them and anything and everything that goes wrong is quickly in the newspaper.Maybe you can just get an assignment somewhere else.

Thanks guy,
Yes it is a travel assignment. I haven't signed anything yet and haven't started out to head to Sacramento to get my California Lc. Thanks for the insight, I'll stay away from this one, I just wanted to know what I was getting into.

That is the raggedy administrators. Because that is one place if I were to get shot send me there. There are some damn good surgeons that have came out of that place. The nurses are the bomb! Sad situation. Some one just needs to clean house.

I'm there now on a travel assignment, The money is okay at $38.00/hr with 48 hr a week gaurantee, travel allowance and private housing, but to say it's unlike anywhere you have ever worked is an understatement. They have some good full-timers in the ER that are a joy to work with, but all in all, I'll be more than ready to go home in 8 more shifts.
