Hospital Closes Because of Ratios?

Just saw this on the news this morning, and couldn't find a news link on the net, but Santa Teresita hospital in Duarte closed suddenly yesterday. The staff only had 24 hours notice.

It sounded like the hospital had other financial problems, but the hospital also mentioned that they couldn't meet the state's new ratio law.

I wonder if these kind of incidents will be used to justifiy opposition to the new ratios.

I saw the CEO on the news. He stated that one of the reasons for closure was the ratio law. I think this is only the beginning for smaller hospitals who are unable to find staff. I hear that Century City Hospital (in LA) is going to be next.

Finally found a link:

"The hospital administrators say changing health care has forced the financial crisis. The state requires a higher nurse to patient ratio which created a financial strain."

CNA predicted this might happen (www.calnurse.org). But you know what- if they can't staff safely then maybe they SHOULD shut down? Now there's a thought!!!!!!!

I agree!

Also, I believe that any facility that makes itself into a good working environment for nurses, and actively tries to RETAIN and recruit nursing staff would not have any problem having enough nursing staff.

The "closing because of the ratios" is one tactic that lobbyists against the ratios have advised hospitals to use.

I'm sure the place had SOME nurses and could take care of a finite number of pts. They could just go on diversion or maybe get some administration "nurses" out onto the floor?

Maybe they could even chop a couple of hundred thousand dollars off of the CEO's salary and use that to pay the nurses they say they can't afford?

Come on!

I say good riddance to that hospital.
