Hey Sunny California! New grad in Oregon looking for work

I grew up in the Bay, and then moved to Foresthill, outside of Auburn. I moved to OR for my husbands seminary training. I just graduated from RN school up here, but there are at least 7 nursing schools in the Portland Metro and most of us can't find jobs. How's the job market in the Sac/Foothill's area?? Our whole family lives there, it might be nice to live by family again! And of course to see the sun again!! I'm not picky about department or shift, just want to work!!!

Whole bay area sux for new grads right now and new folks graduating in november/december and january. I say stay where you are and get a year's experience before coming here.... unless you know someone in a hospital or have a ton of experience.

I do know a NP in Auburn, but I was wondering if the sac area is bad. i kinda figured though... I saw a post from CT and there were tons of new grads without work there too. Is the economy that bad?? I mean people still are ill.....

I thought that Sac wouldn't be as bad since there were less nursing schools in the area...

No it's bad in most of California right now. The bay area is horrible to find work and a lot of the new nurses there went to Sacramento. Plus a lot of hospitals have had hiring freezes, Kaiser just layed off like 2000 workers in the last year, one of the hospitals in Redding also laid off some nurses. The economy is bad all over, just because people get sick does not mean they hire, they just put a heavier load on the nurses they have, or take less patients (lotta people dont have insurance right now because they aren't working).

I'm in the greater Sac metro region and I can tell you first hand: The openings are few and the competition is FIERCE.

Sutter Sac has a sort-of hiring freeze and isn't hiring new grads. I just applied for a few positions there and the computer always responds, "no new grads." I know of one unit a Sutter that hired 2 new grads in June... and received over 100 apps for those two openings.

Kaiser is not hiring any new grads.

UC Davis is not hiring any new grads. They did hire a few over the summer but also required a specific 5th semester preceptorship in a like unit... presumably one of theirs.

CHW is not hiring any new grads. They're pretty much like UCD.

Nope, Sacto's a locked-up market right now.

Keep in mind, you've got Merritt, Sac State, ARC, Solano College, and a few us who commuted out of the area for school.

If your spouse is in seminary then perhaps he's got a connection with someone who can really help because getting hired around here takes a miracle.

You and about a thousand other people.

Mercy is loaded with volunteers who are new-grad RNs just hoping to get an "in" there. I'd guess that most of the other hospitals are, too. (I know that I've just submitted volunteer apps to three different hospitals in the area.)

Yikes! Sounds bad. Just a heads up for anyone interested... the VA in Reno is hiring new grads....

I've applied at a few nursing homes up here and I'm waiting to hear back from an interview. I kinda gave up on the hospitals. There are a few openings at the hosiptals here for new grads but I think like the post above... the competition is FIERCE. I applied for a critical care internship but its slim pickings too!!!
